Traurigkeit, for Violin and Piano

I wrote this piece last semester and was to get it played at a concert. The recording is great in terms of quality, there are some mistakes in the playing however (like always :D)

About the piece: The title is german for Sorrow, and the piece is typically the story of the emotion and all things encompassing it. It's written in a bitonal fashion, meaning two different keys/chords are being expressed at the same time in both parts (either different hands in the piano or the violin and piano together). I don't really like modern music. And to be totally honest, I am usually very mono tonal in taste.

But this was a nice piece, it is probably one of the best examples of contemporary styled music that i have found on this site.

But please post a score! I want to play through it.

It's very impressive both technically and musically. The only complaint I have, is the piece seemed to stop and start quite a bit. I personally prefer a continous flow, but it is a personal preference. The ending also seemed a bit sudden, but again personal preference.

You are obviously quite knowledgeable and this is a technically impressive piece, and but it still retains a lot of emotion, which is sometimes lost in more modern music.

I am always amazed at how performers can play this stuff in tune, it has to be hard to hear.

How do you write a piece in two keys?

Ya, all 20th century (ish) music is hard to play so I was thankful to get a skilled violinist- but about the two keys thing, I like to think of it more as one sonority with two triads emphasized. For instance sometimes, I will have c minor being played in the violin with g major in the piano, it makes for a very interesting sound and color. This is what I pretty much did through the whole piece, messing with different "sonorities" and harmonies to give it that distinct sound of sorrow. I do understand your comment about the continuous flow, but before this piece I had a problem with writing too much so my teacher suggested adding rests to give the listeners time to absorb what they were hearing and what not. Just a preference I guess, thanks for your comments though.

very expressive composition, great feel. i loved some bold and beautiful chord progressions i heard in many places. great harmony handling throughout and inspired lyric character. this music sounds alive, has a soul! congrats! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
