Guitar and Piano Duets?

Any one know of any? Skill level does not matter.

I don't know of any actually, it doesn't seem to be the best combination. Both instruments are perfectly capable of self accompanyment when playing solo, and the sounds don't blend too well in my opinion. I assume you mean classical guitar btw? I play electric guitar too but I can't imagine why anyone would want to play electric guitar with a piano (unless jazz is involved) *struck with awesome idea* "Sonata for Jazz Guitar and Piano..."

I've got some cd's of Ferdinando Carulli at home, and he seems to have written quite a lot music for guitar and piano. Go check it out, it's great music! :)

To mark: Haha, yes I agree...they ARE both capable of solo performance...but thats just what tradition and technicalities say. I dont imagine the repertoire of such a collaboration of instruments to be very vast, but haha, thanks for your wonderful idea of "Sonata for Jazz Guitar and Piano".

My friend and I are actually personally trying (and failing) to write pieces for both instruments in duet, and are finding it incredibly hard. The first reason being that we are both soloists...so when it comes to teaming up...we struggle. The second is exactly your reasons.

Are you the pianist or the guitarist? If you're the pianist, turn the volume down a bit, if youre the guitarist, relay that advice to the pianist ;) I've when trying to play guitar with a pianist the piano was generally way way too loud for whatever I was playing to heard, even with me playing fortissimo :(

There's a gorgeous "Fantasy" (I can't check the exact title nor opus number until my boxes are finished unpacking) by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, for guitar and piano. It's not an arrangement, it's not a concerto reduction, it's an original piece written for the two instruments.

I performed it a LONG time ago. The writing is beautifully balanced between the two instruments. I remember only having to tone down very slightly my forte passages (I was the pianist).

I've played a few of Tedesco's guitar pieces, but I've not heard of any for guitar and piano, I'll have to check it out :)

I will heed to that advice...mind you, he is an electric guitarist with a loud amp and lots of distortion :P

He is getting rather fantastic at fingering an acoustic guitar. Seriously, such a virtuoso...it makes me jealous.

The track with Rudess just playing solo keys with a harp patch.... absolutely beautiful playing, and improv, I think.

a combination I've dabbled with and have always wanted to do more with. It's so shippy.

For classical guitar and piano maybe the arangement of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez? You could also try some of Giuliani's concertos (Op. 7 is good!), which he also arranged from a full orchestra to guitar and piano, however Giuliani's works are a bit tricky to play :dry: hope this helps!

We have actually decided to start writing out own pieces for the two instruments...which is difficult, but yesterday we farted out 9 variations to the mexican hat dance...they are rather tricky! Will post the score later on this year :)
