Romance (mp3)

Featured Replies

Hello, friends, I'd like to share a little romantic orchestral piece with you. It will be part of my composition exam tomorrow along with 2 other modernist pieces (yuck, my teacher made me write those, they sound horrible). I wrote this myself, had the idea for over a month and made the audio in a couple of days, worked almost non-stop. Constantly bouncing to audio on my old PC and mixing was a pain but finally it's done.

Here it is, make sure to turn up your volume a bit, I didn't make it louder for fear of distortion. Hope you enjoy:

Love the melody. Soaring, powerful, MAJESTICALLY romantic. The chimes and orchestra are heartbreakingly beautiful. Your samples are wonderful, your writing is logical yet very driven... This is one of the best pieces I've ever on YC. It actually kind of reminded me of a great Horner melody, (or even vintage Silvestri or Goldsmith.)

KEEP IT UP MAN!

Wow thanks, appreciate that. :)

You've earned it with that gem. : )

We should talk film music sometime.

That's what I want to become, a film music composer. I'm not sure film industries hire 18 year olds though.

Oh and I am also a John Williams fan. :)

omg. this peice brought me to tears , you know I was just skimming around and almost past this post and thought what the heck, and i'm glad I clicked on it , this was one of the beautifulist things I've ever heard.

I'm going to be 18 in a few months... Anyways, guys like us can make it, it just takes a whole lot of push and drive. You've got the talent. :)

One complaint: there's really too much reverb, the sound is muddy.

As film music, it's quite pretty.

As a stand-alone orchestral piece, it's meh (in my opinion, only). Just a bit too clich

Thanks. The reverb covers up some of the unrealistic transactions from note to note in some parts. I had to choose out of "not very realistic sounding" and "more realistic but muddy".

About the modernism, I used to like it but with my not so good composition teacher I started disliking it a lot. And to tell you the truth, I don't feel like getting back into it, the audience for it is small. Tonality is the way to go for now.

I have a score but it's without the percussion (no timpani, bass drum, triangle, mark tree (or I think it's a mark tree), cymbals). Want me to upload it somewhere?

And what's that glissando instrument called? Is it a bell tree or a mark tree? They're not chimes as chimes are tuned and these are untuned. The patch just says Various Metals and it's got some triangles and this.

I actually did take note of the untuned "twinkles" I just generalized with term "chimes." lol Just didn't want to sound musically illiterate or anything.

PS

I'm listening to it again right now... It's even better this time. This is what music's all about for me.

Cool! it sounds great, like Williams, i love this song, thank for postig.

Amazing... where do you go to school?

Wow, I really like the piece!

Yes, it does seem like cliche film music, but within that genre it is quite nice! The use of the orchestra is quite brilliant, what with the lush string textures. It is a tad bit short for my tastes, though. But, I am still quite impressed by this.

Is this a live ensemble? Your samples are just GORGEOUS if it isn't live! If they are samples, I would really like to know the name.

Very nice work :)

Very well done. I am sure you will receive a fine grade for this.

Well my grade was a 9.5/10, but they didn't really count this piece, the orchestration isn't all that great since I did in a day or so, and I made some mistakes in the score since I wrote it at 2AM. They based the grade off the other compositions I presented (the modernist ones). Some staff members said they really like it, but of course they studied the score and saw that there wasn't much effort put into the piece.

It's all sampled, it isn't a live orchestra as that would require around 100 players to achieve such a full sound. I used Sonar, Symphonic Orchestra Gold Pro XP and Altiverb.

I'm thinking of re-orchestrating it and remaking it to achieve a more realistic sound.

Amazing... where do you go to school?

Eastern Europe, school is a left-over from the USSR. Very efficient, I am also a good pianist.

It's a mess, try fixing the string parts please

You seem to have very good hearing. Yeah I'm probably going to fix it.

It is a tad bit short for my tastes, though.

Well yeah I composed it in a day, and did the orchestration and audio in the next day, so yeah I couldn't achieve too much in such a short period of time, not with my skills, I do not consider myself a good composer yet.

Maxx this is very good and I can tell you've got a really good ear, but I must say this to you!

It would be well worth your time to listen to some older film music/music from the romantic period. Somebody on here made the same suggestion to me when I posted a piece, and I have never looked back. I think you have much potential, but a piece like this doesn't do anything to me :( (sorry!) Essentially, modern film music is very limited.

Listen to this music YouTube - Music of Bernard Herrmann - LA Philharmonic skip Tom Hanks by starting it at 2:00.

Basically you need some more dissonance to enhance your consonance. I hope this doesn't come off as being harsh; I honestly think you have a lot of potential, but for me modern film music is very clinical.

I must say I quite liked Bernard Herrmann's Scene d'Amour even though I prefer modern film music. I do like Romantic composers too, my favorite is Rachmaninoff.

Ah i see. Then essentially you have fulfilled your intentions wonderfully I'd say. Although I'm generally not fond of modern film music, I'd say this is a lot better than some of the stuff I've heard in the cinema!

Still I stand by my original comments, and the reason is, someone said the exact same thing to me when I was 17 and it really was helpful. It did piss me off a bit though!;)

Hi Max.

Yes, this is a very very nice piece!

And the rendering is also very compitent, well done on this! It is a bit muddy, not so much on the tail of the reverb, but mostly on how big the room is vs how far you placed the orchestra (more reverb = further away from the mic).

The orchestration is very competent and well thought out, plus it works in the audio so ;). The harmonic language is somewhat clich

Thank you for the feedback, Nikolas. I'm glad you liked it, because you are much more experienced than me - I saw what you are capable of composing. I'll try to change what you told me to.

If this was for your exams, or something, I don't think there's much reason to change it (unless you want it). It would serve you better to start a new tune, about this! :) And thank you for your kind words as well! :)

Very nice work!

I think maybe there's room for a bit more development before the second rise in 00:58, it's just coming to a peak too soon, I think you could have gotten more out of that melody.

I liked the playful woodwinds and pizzicato in the middle section,

maybe a bit over the top with the chimes in the reprise?

Nice touch of harp, very tasteful.

Good work!

Omri.
