Organ Invention No.1

I actually have no clue what to call this, or anything else I've written for that matter. No imagination I guess. Regardless I DO know that this a fairly difficult organ composition. Playable, but why would you want to?:)

I'm just excited to share my hobby with other folks who know much more than I do. So take a gander and tell me what you think!

I really enjoyed listening to this! Parts of it were pretty difficult but in general I didn't think it was too bad to play :thumbsup:. The one thing i was a bit unsure about were the F's in the pedal that began at bar 55 - I thought they sounded a bit muddy and didn't support the melody very well - perhaps slap them up an octave?

As for naming it i dunno - what ever you want i guess :P

Definately a great piece :D are you an organist yourself? If so what stops would you recommend?

What a splendid piece of organ music! I sensed a taste of jazz at the beginning stages. Its a truly colourful work. Goes to show you don't need to write in a baroque style in order to write for organ.

Now, I would critique it more intensely, but I dont play organ, so can't criticise technique. However there is one thing that stuck out to me.

Around bar 51 needs a bit of reworking I think. It just seemed sudden. I think the 20 or so bars prior to this made me decide something bad was gonna happen before i got to that bar...and well...sadly it did. It was as if you just stopped the runs, and whacked it with a chord. Perhaps 2 more bars of runs to make it more even would be better.

I dont know how to explain it, but yes...jsut listen from bar 31 - 51 a few times, and see if u can see what i am saying.

@Ferret: Glad you like it! :) I just started taking organ lessons a month ago, so I only have a basic understanding of stops and registration.

Measures 1-19: A full, cheerful sound. Bordun16+Rohrflote8+Gedeckt4+Spitzflote2? 16+8ft pedal stops will work throughout the piece I think. 20-41: something more melancholy, perhaps a 16' oboe? Accompany that with the left hand using the Rohrflote8.

41-55: Use the same stops you used in 1-19. 56-70: I don't care, just make it dark and creepy. 70-79: Do something silly;) 79-85: Throw in the kitchen sink and a Bombarde and that should do it! 86-End: Same as 1-19 with something extra on the last five bars.

If none of that makes sense, don't worry, I didn't understand it either. I think the mp3 gives a good basis for registration but play around and do want you want with it!:)

@Goodridge: "Splendid" is a word I like:D I agree that around 55 it loses direction and a fair amount of steam.

Regardless, I'm very pleased you both enjoyed it so much. Once I put the scores in order I'll be posting a few more pieces soon.

wow, sounds very debussy esque -- if he ever wrote something for organ at least that's how i'd envision it. Very nice!

Neat piece, but it doesn't seem to have much to do with any of my understandings of the title "Invention". It definatly sounds more like a chorale prelude of some kind.

nice use of pentatonic scale! i think it evokes more of a chinese dance rather than jazz. nonetheless its a musically written piece =)

you may want to start tidying up your score now =P

when i first had composing lessons, the first piece of advice i got from my compo tutor was to learn to format my score. took me ages to get my deformed finale score into a more ordinary looking layout as i composed in scroll view, or panorama view in sibelius =P

I'm glad everyone is enjoying this piece:) I'm thinking I'll finish some others and post them!

@Nik: I have no clue what to call it. "Ripples Under the Parking Meter" sounds silly and its current title is better than the original; ah2008gjuhga.mid!

@Clarinet: I completely agree that my score presentation stinks. I've never bothered to make them pretty 'cause I've never let anyone see them before.;) I use an ancient program named MusicWrite which has some limitations, but I can still improve. Thx for the advice; I need it!

Reminds me of a friend I once had who literally saved every file on his computer under a name chosen by randomly hitting the keyboard. The miraculous thing is he usually knew which file was which.

Funnily enough, I think this would be a pretty perfect title, lol, this piece is so wonderfully evocative of something that that title is also nicely suggestive of... :P How vague. But seriously, I've really, really enjoyed listening to this piece. I can't really comment much technically except to say that you have some very strong and beautiful melodic and harmonic ideas (the A section here, and in the 2nd invention the section beginning 67, were both fantastically engaging), though quite often I feel you get a bit lost in reams and reams of really beautiful music - tightening up on structure, and the transitions between sections, might improve these pieces IMHO. But overall I absolutely loved this, thank you very very much!

Most kind of you Terve. Your gracious (and unwarranted;)) praise, warms the heart of a 'not-so-sure-about-himself' composer.

Aww, I trawled all the way back to July 08 find this piece because I remembered I enjoyed it so much... now it's gone :( !! I'm so sad...
