July 13, 200817 yr I recently when through a jazz workshop and instead of playing an instrument like a saxophone or clarinet, I decided that I would try to play jazz bassoon. It was fun and ,at first, hard to make the bassoon a jazzy but as I practiced it got easier and more fun. I know I'm not the first but I don't know anyone, personally, who plays unusual instruments in jazz.
July 13, 200817 yr Bassoon IS rare....especially for anyone to specialize in jazz. You'll find folks into more free improv and spontaneous music scenes, but hardly anyone plays straight-ahead jazz on a bassoon. Good luck. Some guys do double on less popular jazz instruments, Paul McCandless is one who frequently uses oboe and english horn. Oregon - 1000 Kilometers It's a great sound...
July 14, 200817 yr Donna Lee Straight-Ahead stuff on a bassoon really has a strange sound to it. I dunno what to think :POne "unusual" jazz instrument that really excells is the Bass Clarinet. =DDonna Lee God Bless the Child Summertime I also believe that the Bass Sax should be used more :PBass Sax
July 14, 200817 yr Author Hey thanks. One thing I want to say is that for some instruments, like the bass clarinet, they're not so much "unusual" as they are left out. We had a bass clarinet in our jazz band last year, and my brother played on one when was at school, bass clarinets are great jazz instruments they're just so quiet compared to most other jazz instruments that they rarely stand out, and are mostly left out.
July 23, 200817 yr I think Eric Dolphy was mentioned above - I'm pretty sure he did Bassoon in free-bop My personal favourite of freebop :) Killer version of epistrophy
July 23, 200817 yr I think Eric Dolphy was mentioned above - I'm pretty sure he did Bassoon in free-bopMy personal favourite of freebop :) Killer version of epistrophy Dolphy certainly was a unique voice - I love how his personality shines though, even in unlikely situations like Blues and the Abstract Truth... though, I'm not familiar with any of his bassonish excursions. 'Twould be very cool to hear... I know Makanda Ken McIntyre has played some bassoon...notably with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra... :whistling:
