Beginning of a Rondo

Featured Replies

Hi all,

This is just a start of a Rondo movement for solo piano. Thanks for listening and let me know what you think :)

It was good! It sounded like early Beethoven to me. But, could you possibly put up a score, as it makes it a little easier to follow along.

Thank you  I have posted the score above, what it is so far anyway. I have a rough mental sketch of what is to follow, but it's going to take time to sort it out.

Not bad. I like the theme the most though. There seems to be a problem with clarity(a bit too much reverb?) and the transition to the triplets seems to be a bit fudged(mm 26).

But definitely a keeper.

Did you performer this or is this samples? If so what are you using?

Thanks for the review :) This is using the lowly Steinway piano in Garritan Personal Orchestra. I've tried the Eastwest B

What notation program are you using to play back(sounds pretty decent compared to what I'm used to hearing with sibelius)? Finale or sibelius?

  • Author

I'm using Sibelius. Recently I upgraded to version 5, which can host VST instruments. It's got some notation input bugs though.

Thats what I use... I kinda like 4 better in some regards. Are you tweaking anything to get the playback to sound more real instead of mechanical? (using the playback?)

I'm going to upload something I did a while back.. you care to export it to mp3 and send it to me?

Thanks...

Jon

I probably spend more time adjusting dynamics than actually composing the notes - it helps make the performance halfway human. Here is your piece executed with the Steinway GPO (no ambience):

Thanks. I actually use sib + NI acoustic piano which is pretty decent. I guess its the dynamics that need to be modified to give it more of a humanistic feel ;/

Bump! Bump! :whistling:

I've managed to finish section B, so rounding off A B A yay!

I already have an idea for section C - I think it's going to give me less headache than B.

Bump again .....

I managed to round off A-B-A-C yay! What to follow is a truncated A, and then a coda.

I'll post the updated score once I finish this. Hopefully soon!

very smooth...very lyrical, and so appropriately conceived for a rondo!

I just love the warm mood you capture with the A theme!

Can't wait to get the whole thing. Please send me a completed score at this address, if you would, when you finish (actually--one now would be good):

You are certainly masterful.

hmm...on second look, I must enquire concerning the dramatic chromaticism introduced at 3 mins. The key center becomes almost completely obscured at some points with the swirling motives that you introduce. Intriguing! Why?

Thank you ...... :) I'm far from masterful, but every finished piece is certainly a confidence boost.

I finished A-B-A-C-A! The coda has been in my head since the beginning - I just need to write it down. The updated score is also uploaded, but still needs cleaning up.

The C section does have rather unstable tonality. But actually so does B, with a modulation every beat or so.

I'm not sure if it was the C-section technically, but the c-e-c-eb-b-eb-b-d...etc part didn't really grab me as much, not only because of its repetition, but it sounded very out of place and non-stylistic ( so did a few other things, but this part clashed with the rest of the piece, unlike those). It almost sounded... cheesy, like an attempt to make people who aren't into classical like your piece.

I'm harping on that part so much because the rest was actually very nice for what you were going for. It isn't really my taste, but it was pretty.

Yes...PLEASE add a coda! It builds so nicely and then ends like someone coming in for a landing on a parachute and bruising their rear! :P

Kidding, of course...but such a well-crafted piece deserves a delightful ending.

Wow, you must have read my mind because that's exactly what I was trying to do! LOL, just kidding :P Seriously, I really value your feedback because chances are there are others who think the same thing. I know there is a risk with the shift in harmonic idiom, but it's a risk I'm willing to take. Apart from harmony, if you notice, the episodes (B and C) are actually parallel texture- and structure-wise.

Thank you, I'm flattered by the compliments :D

I'm happy that this movement is now completed, and I invite you guys to take a look at the whole sonata:
