Evolution

Featured Replies

A chamber piece for two clarinets and double bass. When I titled it Evolution, I was thinking more along the lines of how the piece changes harmonically and texturally over the course of the piece. Since the recording was done with Finale it doesn't have all the required extended techniques, so please keep that in mind when listening.

Let me know what you guys think of it!

I'm about 3 minutes in right now. I quite like it so far. I like the way to kind of morphs.

It just started to get exciting, so I'm thinking that because it's called Evolution, it will continue to get exciting, and I'll be very happy. >_>

Yeah. I quite liked that. I haven't got much to say though. Where it's in 5/8, you need to beam those eight notes.

I like it, it has a nice mood to it, light at times, gets darker at some points too, it's evolution alright.

Good job, nothing wrong to say about it.

Anybody else?

I've updated the pdf and barred the offending eighth notes.

Bump!

A fine composition that succeeds in evolving but maintains an integrity of harmonic style throughout.

There is good movement and rhythmic variety. I enjoyed it and find no problems at all.

Well done.

Wow, this is fantastic! Excellent textures and rhythms throughout! I particularly like the last half of it versus the opening bars, but you do use the instruments effectively and in an advanced way. I noticed some minor issues with notation and such, but not enough to argue about it. With bass/clarinet? Some marks seemed unneeded, but very clean score nonetheless. Nice work!

What marks/notation issues can you see? The with bass/clarinet mark is a cue so that the players can know to come in at the same time and know who they're supposed to be looking at for that phrase. While I was composing this I had a couple of clarinetists and a bass player read through it a few times and the one thing they said was that they would like to see cues so that they could be grounded in eachother's parts. They were playing from parts and not the full score.

I might be having a brain fart, but with the notation for the double-bass, is the bass player to play at pitch in your piece?

Generally, the d.b. is in bass clef and sounds an octave below written, as I am sure you are aware, so that is why I am asking.

I know experienced bassists who can read tenor cleff, but I don't think I have ever seen a d.b. part actually written in tenor cleff, or am I mistaken?

No, the bass sounds an octave lower for this piece. Good bass players should be able to read in tenor clef, and since the majority of those high parts to me didn't warrant a switch to treble clef, I used tenor clef.

Cool piece. Very middle-of-the-road (in the sense that it's new and represents the new, but at the same time won't offend traditionalists - it's a compliment).

A trio with double bass and clarinet made me think that if it had been violin instead of the second clarinet then it would have fit into the combination of the Prokofiev Quintet (ob. cl. vln; vla db). I've simply got that on my mind at the moment as I've written a quintet like that and I'm looking around for sub-combinations to complete a programme. I liked what I heard though.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I really appreciate it.

Great sound--I really like the combination of instruments. There is a dream-like, mysterious quality to the harmonies and intervals (mainly 2nds, it seems) used (especially the opening) that I enjoy very much. The ppp-f-ppp dynamics at the very end looks fun! :-) and also sounds great. This is a lovely piece.
