Distortion/Wierd Sucking Sound - Pls Hlp

Featured Replies

So I have been presented with a strange problem on my laptop. When I listened to my music it was distorting even on a low volume level from the computer to the headphones.

I then turned down my programs so that it wouldn't distort so much seeing as turning it down to a level from the computer to the headphones wasn't working.

After I did that I was assulted by a benign sucking sound whenever the volume was soft on the track. It sounds like wind going through a tunnel...

My Hardware:

Headphones - They are Bose... I can't remember the model but they were around 150$

Computer - Toshiba Satellite A135

CPU - T2080 @ 1.73GHz 1.73GHz

Ram - 1 Gb

Sound Driver - Realtek High Definition Audio

I would appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Karl

Again, it's sound card problems. It's probably the same thing causing issues with your copy of Finale. Update the sound card drivers.

You're as helpful as microsoft's support...

@TheMeaningofLIfe,

You should probably try to diagnose the source of the problem first... What is the definition of distortion? Does it sound like it's fused into a mono channel as opposed to the original channels? If so, it's probably your headphone. Try using another headphone or The stereo jack from your headphone can be insensitive after a some time. Try cleaning it with rubbing alcohol in this case.

I'm also assuming that audio was working fine beforehand? Can you define this sucking sound a little more? Were there anything significant that you did before this problem emerged? (ie, installed new software, uninstalled software, moved files, etc...)

Technically, it makes me infinitely more useful than Microsoft, because TheMeaningofLife mentioned sound-related problems with GPO and Finale in another thread.

So I've just updated my finale and I noticed to my own horror that the playback of my bass drum from Gpo's General Percussion is destroying the sound. It causes a wierd "ripple tear" through the rest of the music and it sounds like an over done echo.

I tried recording it by itself and it still happend. I can attach an audio if anyone thinks that would help.

I've also been having problems playing back from the middle of the piece but I think that this is just due to alot of instruments (full orchestra) and my laptops uncapable hardware.

Thanks,

Karl

Thread here.

Ta-da. I knew what I was talking about. See, my particular brand of situational awareness involves being aware of things outside the immediate realm of this post.

yah, I just saw that tread but that's how microsoft support works, they don't try to figure the problem, they only provide ways to solve a problem... wouldn't it be easier to see what the problem is?

We're not tech support, though. And the old axiom about teaching a man to fish definitely applies.

Like I said, reinstall the driver. The majority of problems like this arise from drivers or hardware malfunction. I've personally dealt with this before. If you're lucky, a quick download and install fixes everything. It's not until after you've tried that method that real troubleshooting is necessary.

Thanks, but I tried that already and there were no new ones available. I also uninstalled my sound card driver and couldn't find a way to reinstall it... so I had to use system recovery.

Do you know where the driver would be stored so that I could reinstall it?

Definition of distortion... I'm no good with computers man, sorry. :)

The headphones are brand new. I bought them ... 5 days ago.

I can't define when it started, I didn't notice it connected to any other programs installation/uninstallation.

Thanks anyway. :)

Does it still sound distorted if you were to channel the sound into the built in laptop speakers.

Does the distortion happens with all programs? (Windows Media Player, Winamp, Finale, whatever other media players you use). Are you on Windows Vista?

As for the sucking sound, it's probably continuous as opposed to just quiet parts, it's just that you can only hear it during the quiet parts.

Depending on how Toshiba drivers works, you can probably get the driver from Realtek's website. Otherwise look for the specific driver (Intel 82801G High Definition Audio ). System restore should've reinstalled your drivers and if the problem persists, then it's faulty hardware. How old is the laptop?

Manufacturer's website. Both your sound card and your laptop maker's websites should have the drivers freely available.
