The first drum hits wanted me to hear to song go into overdrive, but never did.

This is great for a period piece... what can you do to modernize it?

What do you mean by saying modernise it Ferkun?

I mean that Satch is a bit dated. The sound of everything is pretty Surfing With the Alien, which is older than I am.

That's not to say that you shouldn't be doing what you are, but for me, there are more avenues. Check out Derek Bailey randomness or adding non-metrical elements like country-blues did or thinking chordally, instead of key-wise, like bebop, paying the kind of attention to timbre like squarepusher... just something that breaks the mold, while still not moving outside something you like.

Now this is a more general thing for rock music than for this piece in particular. But if you're going to work from a genre that, god forbid, you enjoy playing, you have to bring yourself to the table as well, bringing in the disparate influences, so as to stand apart from the crowd.

But this is all much more general than this piece, and more of personal preference than anything set in stone.
