String Quartet in g minor [Writer's block]

Featured Replies

Yes .... writer's block. I'm not satisfied by the stop in measure 21, nor with the ending, but am unsure of a way in which to elongate the piece. I'm also aware of the difficulty of playing 32nd notes on a cello at this speed in measure 10, it was added just on a whim. I have had no formal training in composition before. This was written a while ago and just added to every once in a blue moon until it became this (un)finished product. I'd appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks in advance.

Also, sorry I couldn't get to convert it to pdf format, my program didn't want to work and I have yet to find out what the problem is. I hope most users will be able to view and listen to the piece.

Sorry for the double post, but I wasn't aware most people weren't able to view sibelius files on here (a little confused at this since it's a simple web plugin that's easy to download and use). So here's a midi of it. Hope I can get some feedback on this as I'd really like to make a satisfying ending to the piece.

The 32nd notes in the cello should be fine. The stop in measure 21 is a little awkward , but not too bad; I would suggest having some kind of moving transition into the next phrase there.

However, there are spots where this sounds disorganized. The G-A major second in the last eighth note in the second measure sounds out-of place; this transitions into an even more bizarre F-sharp - G - B-flat - A. I would at least suggest changing the A in the first violin part to a B-flat to continue the pattern in the previous measures. Same goes for the F-sharp - G in measure 7. Even though the .sib doesn't make all of it immediately obvious, you can find a lot of these awkward dissonances in a lot of places. Note that I just looked through the first few measures; you can find many more scattered throughout.

A lot of the sections where multiple instruments are playing 16ths sound a little sloppy. An example is the viola and cello parts in measure 22; while the lines themselves sound fine independently, they don't fit together well. I would suggest limiting the number of active parts at any given time, or even having an instrument drop out for a little while here and there.

Personally, I find parts of it too predictable and harmonically stagnant as well. Maybe you could add some more development in the middle?

I liked the ending. A lot of the ideas were pretty good too, but I would've liked it better if there was a recurring theme.
