When Croatles Waben Sprint

Featured Replies

This short whimisical piece is based on a typo in the notes by Ron (rolifer) on his piece Jubjub where "crotales" became "croatles". I imagined croatles might be small animals that came out to feed wary of the Jubjub and its sound "like a pencil on slate".

I wrote this poem:

The croatles dalberwash and wince

So near the Jubjub's gnacious dorm

Where few do dare in waben sprints

To gnoshly nip the sprouting gorm.

The mp3 is here

The instruments are flute, bass clarinet, violin and cello.

I got a kick out of it.

No sincerly... I enjoyed it. Very playful....

Odd way to end it though....

But hey, I like odd.....

Glad you liked it.

It is basically just a musical "one liner" so I closed with a variation of the opening theme and an "up in the air" harmony.

I realy enjoyed this! Your musical language is very, well, sophisticated. It's very mature. I've been wondering how old you are actualy. You can leave that in the middle if you want.

Anyway, nice piece you have here.

I went to the see the Annapolis Symphony not long ago and the pieces done had the Bass Clarinet in them. Same thing with the one before, so I have been using it a lot lately. I do like the sound of it. The timbre is just enough different from the bassoon that it makes things interesting.

This is a short one, but it does show more control over the instruments than a year or so ago. We just get better with time.

Well done

Actually it was your use of the bass clarinet that gave me the idea to try it.

Yes, I hope we are getting better :).

Thanks for commenting.

mmmm very interesting! you have a great sense of orchestration, dealing with the instruments in a very idiomatic way. i liked it, sounds like a movie soundtrack, creating many imaginary scenes, sometimes mysterious, sometimes funny, always very sugestive. :)

Go bass clarinet! (coming from a bass clarinetist here :D) do you have a score?

Yes I have a score - I edited the top entry of the thread to include the score as a pdf.

Thanks. This piece was very "spur of the moment" based on the amusing typo and rolifer's (Ron's) use of the bass clarinet which I hadn't used at all before.

I'm still exploring different instruments - the good part about composing is that there are almost infinite possibilities.
