Contemplation

Featured Replies

Hello all,

This piece is my newest. It is also my best.

I don't usually show my string orchestra pieces because I am rarely really pleased with them. I am, however, extremely happy with this piece. I tried to limit the notes that I used in creating the melody and fill in the rest of the voices as the music seemed to dictate.

The first measures function to introduce the two themes of the music. They do so in a moderate tempo, and the harmony seems to blossom. The music then slows and the dominant theme, which is in 7/4, is presented in the cellos and basses. The melody grows and varies, which is essential because the theme would otherwise be boring because it is used so often.

After a brief distraction in 3/4, the piece resumes its obsession with the theme, but this time faster and with different inflections.

The higher voices (viola and up) play for a moment, and then the beginning of the piece seems to happen again, but with variations on the second theme.

Then the first theme is reiterated until the end of the piece.

The only thing that is troubling me about this piece is the name. I can feel contemplation in it, but I don't think that it is the best title.

So, this is what I need from you:

1) Notes on the music: what you like, what you don't.

2) Possible titles.

Thank you,

Jon

Btw, could someone make a pdf for me? It would be much appreciated.

You sure create a special mood with this piece. I felt the piece didn't develop really noticebly. I mean I couldn't feel like it was telling something. Maybe that is not what you intended. It laskes variaty I feel and a development of that mood you set. Although at the end the rummbling in the background did create a developing feeling for me.

But in all I didn't really like it. You must know I have quite a stricted musical taste, so don't be offende by it.

As for a name: I dont' normaly title my pieces, so I'm not experienced in it. I think contemplation is suiting. The piece sounds a bit as if someone is contemplating.

Can you post a link to a mp3?

I'm not offended by your analysis. Not everyone likes the same music, that's understandable. You did, however, point out that the piece is intended to convey a mood. So, if creating the mood was my goal, was the piece a success?

Well, yes. You did. Although it wasn't my taste it sure has a distinct mood. Considering it, it even has quite a unique mood.
