Music editing

Hello all,

I've recently recorded some piano pieces om mine on a grand piano. The recordings are quit good, but there is some soft noice throughout the pieces. When i listen closely it sounds like an old tape being reversed. It's a soft noise, but the recordings would be great without it.

Does anybody know a program that can unravel these things? So I can cut it out. Or something in that order.

How can I get rid of these noices without changes the sound of the entire piece.

I can do it for you. :)

Basically, you can do it with most any capable audio editor. I myself use Adobe Audition (3) for most of my post-processing/editing/mastering work, but the "lite" version (I think it's called Soundbooth) is ideal for simple, intuitive fixes like that.

Magix Audio Cleaning Lab is a wonderful (and inexpensive) tool for such things...very versatile, as well. Allows you to dig just about any kind of crud out of a piece of audio - it's also nice for dubbing any type of analogue material you wish to archive into digital :)

I have a copy of Adobe Audition 3, but I can't get beyond Normalizing. Everything I try besides that alters the overall sound. I can imaging there must be some "graph" I can open to see all the different "sound-origins" or something like that.

If you could did it for me i would be o so thank full, Marius. I must add there are about 18 files i want to clean-up. So i can imaging you'd rather explain to me how to do it, which i'll be even so thankfull about, than do this for me.

Well, getting rid of all noise completely without any influence on the sound is pretty much impossible, unless the "noise" is only at a specific frequency where no useful part of the "real" sound is (such as a low buzzing). In all other cases you've got to make some compromise between noise level and not changing the sound too much, which is the greater, the stronger the noise is. The only way to truly get a noiseless recording without affecting the sound, is to use equipment (mics, preamps, etc.) with a very high signal-to-noise ratio (which usually isn't the cheapest equipment), and setting an optimal gain level (if you record something too quietly and have to amplify it a lot afterwards, there's always going to be some noise).

But of course I'm not saying that people who know what they're doing (which Marius probably is) can't still improve the recording somewhat afterwards.

noise is natural, its present in many classical recordings..

you probably cannot take it out without some work.

you can use it in audition i presume.

I found out that when i convert the files from wav. to mp3 the noise is gone. Strangely enough. But while the quality still is good (enough) that noise is gone. So i'm content. Though maybe you're ears tell you different. Below is a link to a mp3. If you feel you can get i clearer you may always give it a go. I will be thankfull for it.

mp3 cuts off everything above 16khz.

i guess thats where most of your noise was. some kind of hiss probably.

also mp3 screws up harmonics fairly. :)
