My first post here (Some film music)

(sorry this is kind of a lengthy post)Let me start by saying i'm a little embarrassed to be sharing this based on a few factors. Firstly I'm possibly the eldest member posting here at 26 lol...but i am a young composer, in that i've been doing this for only about two years. I am learning the ropes to understate it! I've been playing music since i was about 12, then stopped for a long time...i've always had a special knack for music, something i couldn't shake. I eventually went to a tech school and became a sound "engineer". I've been working in post mostly in different departments and recently decided to try my hand at composing. I decided to stick at it based on the feedback i've had from film makers and the referrals i've had. I've been progressing very rapidly and it is something that has come naturally to me. I am sure most here would consider me a hack (and i am! haha!) - it has been humbling and disconcerting hearing how amazingly talented most of you are, and i might add- at such tender ages!

Anyway, this link is to a montage of sorts...just a mix of several scenes from an indie film still in the post stage. It's just a mock up, so bear with the samples! The film is very similar to Eastern Promises. The music is slow and dark, also fairly haunting imo. Majority in C#minor i believe.

I honestly don't know why you would be embarrassed to share this. I think it's great stuff - very emotional and haunting. I especially like the cue that starts around 50 seconds in with the piano. As for the samples, they sound like high quality samples to me. Is the plan for these to be recorded by live instruments?

Thanks a lot! I'm a little embarrassed as i've never really shared anything with other composers on a forum before.

I have a budget for this to be recorded, yes...to what extent of instrument numbers i have yet to figure out. Someone's helping me put the score together too, which i have lost from a midi session (my musical theory and technical application leaves much to be desired, hahaha- but i'm still learning).

Thanks for the comment:)

I'm 36!

I like it. That's the thing about film music - it sets the scene, ambiance, and so on without being a full symphony!

lol-- ok, fair enough about the age :P

You're right...one of the biggest things i'm learning about film writing is that the composer has to take a backseat even when he wants to be heard...it's kind of tricky balancing subtlety and prominence. I think a bad film score is one that you can actually listen to and pick out while watching the film (although i think composers will dissect anything regardlessly!).

Thank you for your words, Anthony.

Welcome to YC.

You are far from the oldest here. I am not even the oldest and I'm ancient.

YC is the first site I ever posted music on and my first posts were crap compared to this.

You are going about it in the right way also. There are many here that will not comment in threads other than their own, but there are a few of us that make sure if someone comments in ours, we return the favor.

Hey man. I'm 24. So thanks for making me feel young!

I think it sounds beautiful! Is the piano sampled? What samples are you using? I can hear the Jon Brion influence in you too!

Very nice little suite you've got here. I really like the atmosphere/ambiance that it sets up.

Since you're going to get it recorded I won't comment on the MIDI production side of things, since all the issues I heard will be ironed out with human performers.

How much of the piece will be done as prerecords vs. live tracking?

Great job, thanks for posting!

Thank you, Ron:) I love it here. If i like what i hear i let someone know...i know how important it is for us to give and receive feedback, it's why we're on a forum to begin with. I honestly feel like a kid in a candy store when it comes to interacting with composers. It can be a fairly solitary endeavor, and we all have such powerful voices we're trying to let out...sharing them with like minds is something special.

Alex-

Using an assortment of samples from Omnisphere, EWQLSO/RA, Reason. Piano is sampled but i like it.

Jon Brion is actually a big influence :)

Andy-

This is something i'm still trying to figure out with my production partner. There is quite a fair bit going on.

This is the first time i will have my music performed by such a large group... It's very exciting and a little confusing haha. I have a fair bit of time to produce it and will post a link here when it's ready.

Thank you both sincerely for listening!

Wow!!!! What a beautiful piece!!!!!! It's really awseome. I loved it when the drums came in, very dramatic. And then the bit after it was hell creepy! and then soft again.

haha I enjoyed it alot... I love strong, almost random transitions in music, so I love film music.

So true xD I'm doing my first real film music project, and i'm finding that I tend to want to fill in all the gaps other wise it just gets boring. I want to make the whole film one huge song!! Hehe it's good to hear someone elses work.

Thanks, mate! It's so very much appreciated:D

I have the same problem with thinking stuff is getting boring, which is even harder when you're working with a boring scrafty film haha...i often just opt for atmospheric textures and pads but silence works like nothing else often.

I had a listen to your myspace you had on your profile. Very nice stuff, i dig your writing style. Best of luck with your first flick! Don't stress out too much like me:toothygrin:

Nice. Can't wait to hear it recorded and everything. And don't worry, my music theory and application knowledge leaves plenty to be desired too. There's more than a couple of times when I feel a little stupid roaming around these forums and reading all the theory speech being used by people who are all much younger than me.:P But that's why we're here I guess - to learn. :)

-unconstructive comment-

This sounds really good.

Very good balance on mixing..I liked it so much..

Best wishes,

Very subtle, very beautiful. It often reminded me of Clint Mansell and Alexandre Desplat. I'm actually quite speechless considering how new you are to this stuff! When the percussion comes in, it has quite and awesome "Heil/Klimek" feel to it (e.g. "One Hour Photo.")

Beautiful, in fact GORGEOUS. I really loved this piece!
