Noteflight: Browser-Based Notation Software

Featured Replies

It's about time as far as I'm concerned. Check it out and see what you all make of it...I'm in the process of testing it out myself:

Noteflight - Make music with Noteflight

I love technology and music. This looks great.

Interesting to see how this develops. I think they need to work on their site a little - I want to see examples of what it can really do, not all this random crap people keep putting up - weird random single parts, stuff in the wrong clef, etc...

Oh wow! Finally! This is a wonderful addition to the notation world. One more step towards mobilization. I am testing.

So I worked with this for an hour. I produced this: Noteflight - Cannibal Animal I

The biggest issue is the syntax -- the order of commands. I don't know if this is true for Finale or Sibelius, but my program, you hit the note value, then place it on the staff. Here, you place it on the staff, then select note value, accidentals, and articulations. This is most odd for open measures, where you have to click on the whole rest and then change it to a note. No big deal, just getting used to it. By the end, I was pretty comfortable with it.

However, there are documented things that I simply couldn't get working. Most importantly was the multiple-ending feature. Apparently, using the text tool in combinations with certain codes (provided in the help) will create certain commands. I couldn't get it to work. ::shrug:: No biggie, but in more hardcore scores, it could be.

Another massive missing feature is slurs -- they have ties, but no slurs. The suggestions box says that this is in progress, so we'll see what dreams may come.

It's got a lot of features I didn't really use, like transposing (though I did use the octave one until I realized you click and drag to get higher notes), tuplets out to 7:4 (they said customs are coming), etc.

What I really liked was that there was a time signature change that applied only to selected measures. This was obscenely useful, and an honest upgrade from Finale Notepad...

Basically? Use it. It's cool, and can only get better.

I'll be interested to see how the Finale/Sibelius importation works...

Can I import scores from another program like Finale or Sibelius?

Yes: you can import scores in the MusicXML format from many popular notation programs, including Finale and Sibelius.

:hmmm:

This is really awesome. It is certainly NOT going to replace the full featured Finale or Sibelius (at least not anytime soon), but I don't think that it is really supposed to. For someone that wants a simple, easy to use, CHEEEEP, notation program.. this is pretty much perfect.

The ability to write, save, and share scores online in a format that everyone can see and playback (AND EDIT.. if you choose) is fantastic and immensely useful.

I remember when as a fresh music theory student our teacher told us to go and download finale notepad to do some of our homework assignments... but its not free any more. This is exactly the type of thing to fill that gap, and its better than Notepad was anyway.

I listened to Cannibal Animal. I noticed the repeat didn't work during the playback..

This is pretty cool, but a few steps off being fully usable. For now it's really a decent tool for jotting things down, and not much more.

Man, I hope they continue developing the free one. It's improved, but still occasionally a little buggy...

Oh I'm sure they will, it's gained a bunch of popularity and, as you said, they've kept improving it. It's no substitute for a desktop app yet, but it's truly a solid and versatile web platform.

It looks pretty slick. I like the idea of being able to access the score and work on it from anywhere.
