Fester's Plot

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

I actually started this piece a couple weeks back, but I haven't had time to go back and actually finish it, but today I had a couple of hours to kill and decided I may as well finish it up.

The piece itself is not for any project, so don't expect the title to make any kind of contextual sense. This was largely just me having fun with some cool instruments and a ridiculous amount of percussion (as per usual). There are some neat overlapping rhythmic elements and other playful quirks as I build to the end.

Fester's Plot

Enjoy! :)

You did it again. xD

Very, very "movie soundtrack".

You're a percussion freak (in the good sense), and this is indeed very catchy!

What Fester is this? Addams Family's? If so, you're missing the harpsichord. :P

Sounds really good Marius. I can really tell your a fan of James Newton Howard.

love how you use the percussion. Do you have sheets for your music? Would love to see how it was written.

Definately very movie-like, reminds me of embarking on a journey to somewhere.

Hi nice to meet you! I'm Kevin. I'm new the YC forums but I'm going to speed up activity here eventually haha. I'm sort of similar to you, but focusing more on Japanese music ^^ Even though I'm more of a Piano/Synth/Celtic and Strings guy (not just hehe) hat do you use for your percussion? Full version of VSL? It would be good to have the samples for when the time calsl for it hehe.

Festers plot was very enjoyable! Very fun to listen to hehe. Well done on a great piece :)

Very good quality samples there - are they from Storm Drum? Production is very good - although I would take off quite a lot of the reverb going on there - it made some of the sounds clash particularly when the glockenspiel and bells (??) came in. Only thing really for me really is that you could have developed the themes more and used a simple A-B-A structure to give it more of a beginning-middle-end. At present it is more like A-B-C-D-E-F Will have a nose at your other stuff :-)

I think Tan Dun in Crouching Tiger showed what you can do with percussion - absolutely phenomenal stuff - If you've overlooked it highly recommended for a listen even if you haven't watched the film.

Hey guys!

Berlioz: Happy to be a freak! It's not actually got anything to do with the Fester from the Adams Family, I just sort of gave it a title and this was it. A harpsichord is actually an interesting idea...I might try tossing one in to see what happens.

Reth: Yes, you're absolutely right of course, I am a fan of James Newton Howard. Sometimes I think his work sounds somewhat stifled and under-developed, but the underlying material is always great and I can tell that whenever he lets loose, good things happen. I appreciate the comparison!

Q: Welcome! You're new, right? Anyway, glad you enjoyed my percussion....obviously I did too! Unfortunately I don't really have any sheet music for this since I just performed it all into my sequencer myself without bothering to write it in a notation program first.

Kevin: Welcome to you too, nice to meet you as well! To answer your question, my percussion is made up of a fairly vast collection of libraries that includes some VSL, but is definitely more varied. The key to nice mock-ups is multiple libraries, I've found. Besides, I don't really like VSL's percussion much. :P TrueStrike is a superior series of percussion libraries.

lj: Glad you liked the samples — there's actually only one patch in there from Stormdrum, the rest are culled from several other libraries. I see what you mean about the reverb and, while it's not bothersome to my ears, I actually know exactly where it comes from and it's just the lithophone's reverb settings that do it. Very piercing instrument sound, was awkward to fit into the larger ensemble mix. You're also right about the development, though I enjoyed just sort of flowing from one idea to the next here....structure makes me itchy. I'm also agreeing with your Crouching Tiger views....wonderful wonderful music there.

Thanks for all your comments and welcome to the new folks — must get to returning the favour! :D

I like you Marius - you take criticism well, nice one. I'll deffo look out for any other stuff that you post and hope you get time to listen to mine and tell me how scraggy it is lol
