12 Preludes for Guitar

Featured Replies

I have resisted posting a thread with my compositions for fear of seeming...falsely proud. Oh well.

I just finished my twelveth prelude (12/24) for guitar. My original intent was to add different keys to the guitar repertoire, but it turned into just writing a set.

change yoru photo . make me sick ...

Hi, I haven't heard them all, but i like the strange one in c#minor, reminds me a little of my (own attemt) to write for guitar.

On your 1st prelude in a I wouldnt stop the waltz rithm, its like a hiccup in the music :)

a minor- Mysterious sounding ,because of the chromatic note in Maine theme nice!

csharpmajor is really nice!

They all seem good to me- they hold together well and have interesting harmonies and varied rhythms.

I have a couple of general points:

I wonder why you have written so many in minor and flat keys? I feel some more in major and sharp keys would help balance the set.

As you said you have chosen keys that are unusual for the guitar. Maybe I'm not up-to-date, but someone once told me that the reason so many guitar pieces are written in the more "basic" keys is to keep more of the open strings sounding. I believe this is also a problem with the flat keys.

I think all your MP3s are played by Finale and maybe this is not very representative of the true sound of a guitar. You seem to be an able guitarist - maybe you could play them yourself?

This is more of a halfway point. 12 out of 24. I'm not writing them in any particular order. Just because an open string isn't diatonic doesn't mean you can't use it.

I've posted a few videos of them.

A few interpretive mistakes and memory slips. I'm recording on a computer headset. :P

Jeez, my hair looks crazy in all these. Now, it's right next to my scalp haha.

I like your piece. C# minor was inspired by Brouwer simple study No.6 and Villa Lobos etude No.1.

For the hiccup thing:D, is it around measure 17? Or the variation, albeit small, with the quarter note arpeggios?

No, it wasnt ms 17, thats a natural position for a pause. When I listen, I automaticaly divide your music in frases of 4 measures each:

ms 1-4, a in the bass

ms 5-8, like an answer to ms 1-4 (nice F in 7/8; prevents for becoming dull ;)

ms 9-12 is like 1-4

ms 13-16, like an answer to 5-8. here ms 14 is the hiccup

ms 17 comes with something new. Other chords (good ones!) other rhithm, all good. ms 14 is a strange hiccup.

I'm not sure if its clear to you now?

I understand, but I like it. XD
