Too dry, you think? I'm always afraid of putting too much reverb on because you seem to lose the small details. I didn't notice a difference between first half and second... I'll go and check now.

Hmmm I think your right... the Violins when they get louder DO sound a bit dry compared to the rest of the mix. Do you need generally need to apply a bit more reverb to ensemble parts than solo do you think? I'm saying that because i've applied similar levels of reverb to the oboe, bassoon and french horn and they seem fine.

This is amazing. I really envy the programs you are using! By the, what ARE the programs you're using? I'm a Finale user. Just started putting my compositions on Finale! But, what do you use?

Hey!

Well, I think each instrument needs to be fine tuned one by one, because each instrument will react differently to reverb. However as long as the overall sound doesn't sound like they have been recorded in 15 different rooms and you're happy with it, it's ok.

Remember that this is just my opinion, and I LOVE reverb so get more opinions too!! haha. It's sounding really good though, so keep it up!

Firstly, almost everything from VSL needs to be always eq'ed. Get the Vienna Suite which has presets for resonance control for all instruments. Or, do it yourself with your own eq's (preferably a resonance control type).

Secondly there needs to be more reverb in the second part. Use a long-ish but dampened hall reverb.

The mix has definitely improved since the first time I heard it so good job.

Really enjoyed this - a very engaging mood.

One bit sticks out for me - at your climax point you have pretty much the entire ensemble moving through a harmonic minor scale in octaves/unisons. My feeling is that this biggest moment could be really improved if you had part of the ensemble doing something different - maybe more chordal, low brass punch, strings in tremolo perhaps, shrilling high woodwind, drums going beserk, whatever you like, just something... broader.

Good stuff.

Hey Max. I have EQ'd all the parts. I think this partly comes down to personal preference. See I really like a light touch with reverb and I prefer the dry 'studio' sound becuase all the parts seem so much brighter and more precise. Whereas some people really like the sound of a vast space. I just checked the price of the Vienna Suite...man I am not giving them anymore of my money for a while...SO expensive!

Hey! I understand what you're saying. I did originally have flutes, basoons and oboes doing runs the the ol' drums banging away, but I actually just preferred the stripped down sound of the strings in octaves...

Hey! It's sounding much better, though there are a few things that still stand out to me as needing to be fixed.

1) Good God, get rid of the vibrato violin patch, or at least switch it to a patch where you can control the amount of vibrato. Most of those violin lines would sound much better if you applied a NV patch, or added a touch (JUST a touch), of vibrato increased along the length of the note to add expression. As it is right now, it sounds like your whole violin section is sitting on some sort of extremely wobbly chair.

2) You need to humanize your lines more. There's no expression in them right now. Phrase them, give them breath spaces, unquantize them a bit!

Apart from that, this is shaping up nicely! Just a little more detailed MIDI work and better patch selection and you'll have a really solid piece.

Sorry I didn't reply Earth... Cheers, i'm getting there just experiencing a big learning curve with some of the stuff I am using...getting there! I converted to Logic from Cubase... wouldn't go back! I'm also using Vienna Symphonic Library Special Edition and EWQL Storm Drum (and recently RA on a buy-one-get-one-free offer). I haven't come across Finale...but i'm sure all these programmes do much the same thing ey? :-)
