Ostinato - Wind Ensemble

Last year, the music teacher in my high school decided to take the concert band to Cuba. I was like "Yay!" because I thought I was going to go as well.

I went to Europe instead, but I decided to write this for a few people who were going. I had planned on getting it played in Cuba, but it didn't happen because it wasn't finished in time to get it ready.

So now I have this piece lying around for a very, very weird ensemble. The group going was 4 flutes, 4 clarinets, an alto saxophone, 3 trumpets and a trombone (and some percussion but I didn't want them in my piece).

It's a relatively... simple piece. Usually when starting a new piece, I try to challenge myself by doing something I hadn't done before. I guess I did this time by writing for a top-heavy ensemble. But whatever. I think it turned out decent.

I think this is a quirky little thing- I like it!

If you were thinking of revising it, or reworking it for other instruments, you might want to try altering some of the accompaniments to work in contrary motion from time to time. For instance, rather than harmonizing in parallel thirds, alternate the notes so that one oscillation goes up and the other down. That makes a neat shimmering effect.

haha this is cool! spritely.. id say in the middle section...starting at bar 49, try changing chords, youve simply got WWs doing repeated 3rd leaps the whole time, the chord needs to change, it sounds a little weird... i love the "medieval" main theme tho! cool canons. well done!

The moment this started playing, it might be due to the midi, I started thinking of some type of boss battle from a video game of some sort, perhaps DonkeyKong64.

This is a very fun piece to listen to.

Based on just the midi, It seems like a fun little piece.

I think you would be better off labeling your instruments a different way. The way you have the score set up, it looks more like the piece is made for 2 flutes, 2 clarinets etc. Label them as flutes 1,2 and flutes 3,4.
