Music Genre Chart

Yes, but there are two types of bands. If we are categorising by instrumentation, we'll have orchestral, for sure, because orchestras include strings. Then we'll have large ensembles without strings. I.e., wind band. Then we have vocal, then chamber.

This is where it gets confusing... where does percussion ensemble go? It's not a WIND band. BUT if we just say plain "Band" without the "wind" part people will inevitably put stuff in there that is for guitars, bass, and drums, i.e., not for large ensemble. Do vocal solo pieces go in the same category as large choral pieces? Or do they go with chamber? Should vocal be a category, and "large ensemble" and "chamber and solo" be a subcategory of vocal? Once we answer a few of these questions we can finalise the layout.

Chopin:"And you know what, I probably will have this "chart" as an aid somewhere on this site, so people can understand how to categorize their music. Proper categorization is going to play an important role on YC."

Just please tell me this chart will then be collapsible. It helps so much to see just the broad categories, then to be able to expand individual categories at will.

Also, hopefully this list of genres we're working on, ie. pop/classical/jazz/etc, does not consist of "categories", but organised "tags", no? We can not expect to categorise all the music that passes through this site, but if you offer these as given tags, you could easily make refined searches, i.e., if I want music in the vocal category identified by the tag, "soul" or piano music under the tag, "impressionism" or "twelve-tone".

Question, is a violin sonata a solo or chamber work? In other words, should we put solos under their own category? Hence major instrumentation categories would go like this:

  • Large Ensemble
    • Orchestral
    • Wind band
    • Percussion ensemble

    [*]Chamber Ensembles

    [*]Solo Instrumental Works

    [*]Keyboard works

    [*]Vocal

    • Large Vocal Ensembles
    • Chamber and Solo Vocal Works

    [*]Pop Ensembles

    [*]Electronic and other

This is tricky indeed. "Instrumentation" will handle the forums. We don't want any more than 5-10 forums to handle this part. James, please look at the test site, sign up, and upload music to get a better understanding how this system will work. I will PM you the test site link.

As for the chart, I am thinking something like family tree style popup menu. But there will be fields where a user can type in the genre, and as someone types, it will autopopulate. If someone chooses a tier 3 genre, tiers 1 and 2 will automatically fill up. If someone chooses tier 1, then 2 and 3 will still be left blank. You get the idea.

Thus, we are not responsible for categorizing music, the user is. This is why I need this genre chart. If I were to leave the text fields without boundaries, we would have very messy data, duplicates, irrelevant categories, and the directory would be just one big mess.
