Suppressed Memories

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I recently finished this piece and would really appreciate some feedback.

Thanks,

This is quite impressive! I like how it feels like you're... searching for something, about three minutes in, trying to bring out those suppressed memories. And I appreciate your subtle mood shifts to and fro, from vague depression to mildly pleasant wonder, and then back. I wish I had more to say, but I don't, even after wracking my brain a few times--sorry :( But it was a very nice 7 minutes and a half minutes :)

I agree with Serge, this is a very beautiful piece. The shifts in accompaniement patterns are quite breathtaking and nicely paced! I love the longing qualities of this. Any chances of being able to peruse a score?

Thank you Serge and Woodruff for your kind words. As of right now the whole score is written out in a sketch book. When I have time I will be putting it in to Sibelius and posting it.

Once again thank you for your kind words.

Nicely played, though perhaps a teeny bit too much rubato on occasion.

Lovely moody atmosphere you evoke with this.

For this length of solo piano piece, though, it sounded like it stayed in the same key for 90% of the time. There's no real inherent problem with that except the ear gets tired of what it has already heard. Maybe be a bit more adventurous with modulation (especially when the theme returns).

Nice work.

Thanks Daniel for the advice. After listening to it with fresh ears today I do agree that there could be a little less rubato at times :).

I also thought about when the main theme returns about modulating through a few different keys and returning home closer to the end. What are your thoughts on that?

Also even though the song sounds like it is in the same key 90% of the time it is actually about 50\50 between the two main keys of the piece and at times it modulates for short amounts of time, Maybe there is a way I can stress though modulations a little stronger. Any tips on how I could do that?

Thanks,

Landon

Sounds good.

As for making the keys distinct: you could make a big deal out of the modulation? Make it dramatic maybe. Or choose keys that are less closely related.

I really liked this piece! It is a beautiful work of lament that keeps the listener engaged, despite its overall tempo. The key changes from G minor to G major were a refreshing touch, but personally, my ears longed for a bit more exploration harmonically and texturally. For instance, where you find yourself in the key of G minor, a small deviation to the key of Eb would add additional "catch" to the flow of the work. But this is totally just conjecture - I highly enjoyed the work as it is, and it stayed very interesting through the whole 7-or-so minutes!

Best regards,

Max.

I agree with others that some exploration to other harmonies would greatly improve the overall quality of this piece. The first two notes are really beautiful!

But repeating that octave over and over sounded to me like you were selling your piece. You handed it over to some popular idea. It's not subtle anymore. The Bb is shouting look how emotional I can be, and by doing so looses its charm and really starts to annoy.

You could do a III-46 for a change and so move to Bb major, or go to VI as Max suggested...

Keep up! :)
