Christmas 2009

Featured Replies

Hi, and a very Happy Christmas to you all :santa: I decided to post this to fit my song name!! I've only been composing for 8 months, so it'll probably still suck!!!Although this is "finished", major changes are almost certainly going to take place in the next week or two - mostly the last 30 secs (it's a mess at the moment, but I wanted this to be out today) Comments will be much appreciated !!!This was made with LMMS, an open source DAW, and free samples found on the internet. Thanks to Journey's End for inspiration :)

Christmas 2009

You know I really like these sounds.

I downloaded LMMS, then uninstalled it.

I could not figure out how to get the program to function.

In your spare time, could you possibly give me a 30 second quick setup of how... to work a DAW?

Yeah Sure, first things first - what do you need to know, just how to use a DAW??? I found LMMS fairly intuitive, so anything in particular you don't get??

Cheese

This sounds pretty good for everything being free and for being only 13 years old, this is a fine composition as well. One of the best things about composing is that the more you do it, the better your pieces will get.

I have been waiting for you to post a piece and I am glad you did.

Audacity is another freebie that you can use and it will get you some needed volume into the piece. Also download Sir reverb. That's another freebie that will add some decnt Convolution Reveerb to your mix.

Nice work

Thanks rolifer!!

I've got Audacity, and I've just got Sir Reverb!! Thanks for the heads up. However, I'm not looking forward to using Sir Reverb as VSTs + LMMS + 256MB RAM = FAIL :( Anyway, I'll use Audacity to amplify and sow in future (looks forward to using new toys)

For having composed for only 8 months, you have done very, very well. Everything sounds wonderful, though the intro is very quiet. It could just be because I am in the middle of Starbucks with a so-so pair of headphones ;)

Good job, and keep it up! I can't wait to hear more.

The name is very misleading as to how the piece will sound  Quite a misnomer! I was expected jingly bells and happy music.

I like the contemplativeness and calmness of the music, and the little details you put into the piece really bring it to life. Also, the cymbals at 1:40 were very nicely done, to lead into the next part of the music: oftentimes, I hear the cymbals at parts that don't serve to actually help or accent a piece at all, so I'm glad to see you avoid that pitfall! :)

All-in-all, very nice work! Thanks for sharing! :D

Thanks Serge!! I suppose that something like "Winter Wonderland" would be a more appropiate for this, but meh, I finished it on Christmas Day, so I called it Christmas 2009.

Well it has a more "silent night" kind of solemn peace on earth sort of sound than it reminds me of "jingle bells"

I thought it was quite nice actually. I gather that the software you used doesnt have a score available for viewing, am I right? I always like to follow the score as I listen :santa:

Either way. I think you really did accomplish a "Christmas" sound. Good work.

Simply lovely writing. Im very impressed, only 8 months!? Great job brother

nicely done cheese! i guessed i missed this track somehow, glad it was brought up, there are some mix problems but the composition is very nice on its own

Well, considering this are all freebies you did a great job. I'm fairly impressed, everything sounded good except those cymbal crescendos, they are too loud. The total volume of the track is pretty low to begin with, you might want to boost it a few dbs, check the master db meter, you want to have your loudest parts almost reach 0db but never go over it, that will cause clipping.

8 months? WOW (not world of warcraft :P) doesn't even begin to describe it! And I loved that part from 1:17 to 1:40. Absolutely beautiful! I think I shed a tear lol

Keep it up!

Drue

im listening to it while im writing , the intro is very emotional , maybe it captures the feeling of a family that are buying presents or maybe this is the first christmas without a member of their family . i like the sounds of your (xylophone ,right??) at 1:40 it captures the feeling of christmas .but in the end i dont think you should have used this strong drum , i would have gone for something calmer , but its just an opinion. anyway good job , the quality is really good ( doesnt sound like a freebie) . keep up the good work , btw Christmas songs always reminds me of john william's main theme from home alone :D
