Wow, I REALLY LIKE that video. That might be one of the best videos for practicing incidental music because of the series of emotions it presents.

I thought you did exceptionally well in capturing the intricate details (Kiwi hammering the nails, his struggle pulling the rope to the tree, etc.). One of the things I thought you could have done was given the beginning a more upbeat feel that would have helped in making the comical moments in the beginning more laughable. I felt it was too depressing at the beginning.

When Kiwi makes his flight, you captured that really well I thought. It's too bad the flight sequence isn't just a little bit longer. It's such a magical moment for the film, something the film builds up to, and if the film-maker had just given us one or two more angles of this flying sequence, it would make such a big difference. But you handled it brilliantly all the same, so no complaints!

All in all, I like your version better than the original composer's work, so pat yourself on the back for capturing the film so well. Good job!

Oh thanks I really appreciate it.

You're right for the beginning maybe it fits better something more ''relaxed'' and then a gradually crescendo until the flight. But I thought it this way cause from the beginning his has decided to die and he is already preparing for that.

Also I forgot to mention that I used two basic techniques:

Music combined exact for the picture for example as AntiA said very correctly (hummering the nails, falling/sliding from the rope, some trills when his jumping ect)

and second music just to express the emotion of the character and the whole situation.

Please feel free to comment anything that you like or you don't. :)

Hi Glass!

I'm torn here, because I adore this animation and I enjoyed the original musical take on it, so it's interesting to see you take it in a different direction. I'll start off by saying that I like your rendition, but at the same time I felt that it was a little too cartoony in its adherence to so many of the video's hits. What I liked about the original was that it was very cute and kept you from suspecting the sad ending, but it was also very simplistic and therefore stayed out of the way and let the visuals dominate rather than trying to butt in and comment on everything. There are opposing schools of thought on this, and I felt that in this case the original's treatment of the video material was more tasteful and effective, even though your take was more musically developed and satisfying.

So overall I enjoyed your rendition from a musical perspective and I think you did a great job of writing a commentatory score, but from the perspective of film scoring effectiveness, I would have prefered it toned down. Production-wise it's decent for the tools you had available, but I think some upgraded sounds and slightly more polished sequencing/mixing will help you sound more appealing to potential employers.

Good work, and keep at it! :)

Marius thanks for looking a little bit further to this...I agree very much with you.

I know very well what you mean cause I was collaborated with some directors and I have wrote some original scores.

First I wanted to write something completely different from the original and from other prospective and second I was free from director  so I decided to take it a little bit further and experiment with it.

I think if I was the original composer the result it would be completely different cause no one director wants the music to dwarf the visuals (exept of some exceptions of course)

I am as torn as Marius is, but I actually think that your version is more effective ;)

While it's true that the tone of your version gives a slightly ominous feel to it, people who've never watched the video before will probably attribute it to tongue-in-cheek humor (Ohhhh, look at that pooooor kiwi slaaaaavvvee, how cute!). Then when the kiwi "flies"...Oh my god, that's one of the most heart-breaking things I've ever seen, and I shed a few tears upon seeing it (I've never seen it before now, but I immediately favorited the video). And you captured the hugely mixed emotions of the kiwi SOOOO well... :sadtears:

I'm rating this 10/10 and favoriting it, thanks so much for sharing! :D

Cool Music!!

There isn't much that hasn't been said, I like the overall structure. However, it'd be worth working on the realism factor. And to judge between yours and the original?? Hmmmm....tricky qwuestion, but with a little work on realism, I would instinctively prefer yours :)
