epic trombonage.

Thank you! :)

GREAT job robin! I've heard your stuff before, vamp1, mobius, but this is your best work yet! I loved the transitions into the solos, and the general flow of the piece, all in all i loved it, and I will probably put it on my ipod, right along side your vamp and mobius :P

great work!

Hey Robin, great piece!

Where are you guy's performing here, and could you tell me a bit about your group here? I'm around the Windsor area myself, but would love to see you guy's perform next time I'm in Toronto. (which is every couple of months)

(Also, I'd love to get lessons in Jazz piano from you're pianist. Does he teach at all?)

The performance was at my M.Mus recital at UofT. We play around town fairly regularly - next show is at the Tranzac on August 28th ;)

I compose chords like some of these for orchestra and many cringe at the idea of it. I guess I'll never understand that.

I just watched the videos and altough they are not of the highest quality, they still sound and look pretty damn good.

Great work on this.

:) Thanks for listening/watching.

It appears that the effectiveness of chords/voicings changes greatly depending on context. ...also, the overall experience and tastes of the listener - I expect the same people who cringe at yours would cringe at mine as well ;)

less saxophone, MORE TROMBONE!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Wow, it was great, it made me think of some guy in San Fran at night went he gets chased into a dark alley, running faster and faster. Somehow he escapes to a harbor (iguess, where's san fran) where it looks like he's lost them.

But then he can't shake the feeling hes being followed by something so hes forced to quicken his pace until he finally sees a busy intersection. Now he is casually walking down the sidewalk for an uneventful. However, he is wandering into worse and worse parts of town. (This guy has all the luck)Then he realizes...

He is utterly lost in the nearby gangland, a feeling of apprehension growing. Thugs emerge from hiding places, this is finally the end to the horrible night when he spots a diner in the distance and makes his way there, finally safe from the horrors of the night.

Are you crazy?!..... :horrified:

@ Covey

Thanks for listening...I'm glad you got such a vivid visualization from it. ;)

...

Also, I think the balance of saxophone to tromboneness is good.

of course not!:w00t: As a Posauner myself, I love hearing the instrument ANYDAY over (cough) ____________________ :P

Ha, I meant MORE improv from the trombone!

I see... :hmmm:

I still think it's balanced pretty well... but, then again, more trombone is never a bad thing. ;)

As a jazz writer I can say that I liked what you did here, but I find myself wanting... well MORE. It had kind of a cool groove which works well with modal changes, but it would have really sung if you made cooler voicings that included more instruments. What would sound really cool is if you used stacked quartal (sp?) harmony on the chord hits that utilized ALL or many of the color notes on the chords like the 9th, 11th, 13th.

This is my favorite voicing that I use ALL the time:

9

13

3

7

Speaking of 13th, a regular minor sixth chord (or just a minor 13 chord) really just works better in harmony than a minor flat6 chord. I don't understand why you used them.

Now rhythms were very cool and I feel that's where your strong point was. Though the main groove is pretty overused

One more thing; I feel it was a bit too soloistic, unless that was what you were going for. I would have appreciated it much more if you had a section with a harmonized melody between the WWs or with a trumpet, or whatever, but exploration of harmony is your best friend in jazz.

Overall I liked it, but it was bit of a clich

Thanks for listening, I'm glad you wanted MORE... I think, overall there's ENOUGH in this piece... yes, some of the textures were a bit static throughout - that is something that will develop with further performance/rehearsa. One session with my musis is hardly enough.

It wasn't supposed to "sing". Also, trust me, the voicings are cool... I intentionally didn't often include more instruments - that's the texture I wanted. I also tend not to go for predictable "full voicings" with "ALL the colour notes" ... it's boring. I like strange, close voicings with thinner textures and more striking sonorities. Also, did you listen to the whole tune? It gets pretty thick as the piece develops...

It..."works better" ?? Learn your chord/scale relationships. I chose the b6 for a reason - That scale was the colour I wanted. Dorian (your apparent favourite) is boring and predictable. Working in modal structures is all about controlling the energy and "darkness" with the scale/harmony. "min(b6)" is VERY different than "min7". I think, as you gain more experience, you'll start to see the need/usefulness of more colourful/intricate modes. Get away from "Impressions" and dig into some Kenny Wheeler ;)

Now rhythms were very cool and I feel that's where your strong point was. Though the main groove is pretty overused

I can agree with you here...again, that's something that will evolve as the musicians become more familiar with the music.

I write for the soloists...my music, that ensemble is always focused on the exploration of the individual juxtaposed against the group. I also find traditional "sectional" writing boring. I prefer the sound of a singular voice on top of an ensemble texture, as opposed to "drop-2" sax voicings through the "shout-chorus" ... More Duke, less Basie. I also think the harmony was pretty well explored...

Overall I liked it, but it was bit of a clich

Robin: this is great stuff. Especially as a saxophone player myself, I really enjoyed everything about this piece. Thanks for sharing!

You know, I have listened to this multiple times... thought I had already said something, and just now realized I hadn't up to this point...

SO, here I am!! HELLO!

It was wonderful, hence why I listened more than once. No further comment.

Thanks so much for listening!! :) You can learn to improvise - it's all about practice and familiarity (with the music and your instrument) ...
