Destruction of Time and Logic

Featured Replies

This was originally a piece I uploaded to try and win "The Worst Piece" competition, but this piece has received quite a few favorable reviews, and I've actually taken to it myself. I agree with the judge of the competition: this would be interesting as a soundtrack. I think this could possibly be used as a final show-down type of thing, in a dimensional rift where time and logic begin to unravel, and those things begin to no longer apply. To those of you who would like an undistorted version, or a score: no luck, I'm afraid. My computer suffered a crash that destroyed the entire CPU, and the score was lost. I'd already uploaded it to Box, so the mp3 is still fine, but I have literally no idea how I made this, since I didn't use careful planning or anything (since I wasn't taking it all seriously, which is understandable).I used Sibelius 6 to create this, with no fancy tampering with it using something like Audacity: that distortion you hear is the fact I turned the volume up to sky-high levels. It's literally so loud that even when you play it soft, your speakers will still pick up that static in the background.NOTE: this piece is definitely not for everyone.

Don't need a score to tell you I love this work - as an intro to a final show-down kind of sequence - for a game music track. It has a really powerful soundscape that almost creates a wall of sound that more or less blasts the listener. It's like walking into some final dimension of hell and feeling the full force of fire and brimstone wash over you, if that makes sense. But then the action begins, and that's what I expected to hear next.

So, instead of repeating the idea over and over without hardly any variance, I'd keep what you have as an audio track and layer things over it like an energetic or maybe even heavy "punk" beat, and maybe you could bring in big orchestration (of course, when you do you'll want to mix down what you have to balance with any other instruments you bring in). The interesting thing about this track is you've opened the piece to really accomodate almost any sonority. Your canvas is pretty much open for anything to layer over this. That's what I love about creating walls of sound. You can convincingly do just about anything with it.

I don't think the work is finished. I think it just started, and there are many ways you could go with it. I hope you'll do something more with it, honestly. Oh and even though you lost everything with the crash, it's still good to tell everyone what gear/software you used to create this recording. People like me still want to know, so edit your post with that info when you get a chance.

Thanks for the very detailed comment, AA! :D I'll edit my post now about that.

It's totally my bad. I'm sure Ron will edit his reply back into his post at some point. I think he's trying to get over the shock of his encounter with my stupidity. :(

Try this once again.

First I will state something positive. ;)

Nothing on my computer broke when I played this piece! At least I hope that is the case. I think that is about as positive as I can get. When I first hit play, I was convinced something was out of whack, so I immediately turned the player off. Then I read your post and thought perhaps there was nothing wrong, so I tried once again.

After getting over my first feeling of utter abhorence, I realized that if this was inside of a game, I would forever play that game in a muted mode. I even went back afterwards and played it thru a second time to be positive that I truly disliked listening to this one. I do hope you have won the competition as this does rank as one of the worst compositions I have heard in a long time.

Since my post from before was destroyed, I listened to this once again before making these comments. If for some reason this post disappears and I have to post again, I will refrain from listening to it a fourth time. :P

If you had written the above review, I would probably fire you. But since you originally composed this as a horrible composition, I feel that my comments are appropriate and I sincerely wish you success in the competition. Just don't ever ask me to listen to this again. I have been lucky so far that my computer has not self-destructed, but don't want to push my luck.

Don't tempt me. :) J/k

I think you should listen to it a fourth time just because you said you wouldn't. I can always destroy your post again just to see if you'll do it. :)

Ron: :D That's the beauty of this piece: whether you love it or hate it, I've done my job! This is definitely one of those pieces that you literally cannot have luke-warm feelings about: you either love this (like the judge of the worst piece competition does), or you despise this as much as you do. I'm glad you hate it so much! Btw, I burst out laughing when you said nothing broke on your computer when you played this piece! I too am convinced that my computer broke solely in rebellion to my creating this monstrosity/masterpiece of epic proportions!

AntiA: Now don't be cruel and unusual! :P

Heh, just be grateful my stupidity in operating on the forum didn't wind up gutting YOUR post. Ron's forgiving. Me... I'm destructively clumsy. :)

Well, when you put it like that  Thanks for not destroying my post! I'm eternally indebted to you!

Glad to be of service. :)

Hi Serge,

An interesting experiment, but it's repetitive and loud. I understand that some people may have given you the impression that it would work well in a soundtrack setting, but I choose to respectfully disagree with them on the grounds that if something is meant to be accompanying some manner of interactive or visual adventure, one generally doesn't want it to be so extremely obtrusive and grating — certainly not for such a consistent span of time. If you take the score to the recent game Dead Space as an example, there are some moments of absolutely vicious noise, but they are only sustained for comparatively brief moments of time during intense in-game sequences. Otherwise it's just tiring and painful to listen to and it breaks you out of the immersion instead of keeping you in.

That being said, I think it's good of you to try new things and, given the context within which you initially composed it, I can't fault you at all. Besides, I know you're capable of writing far more pleasant and compelling music, so I'll end by saying: nice experiment, pity you didn't win the competition, and I look forward to hearing what other things you come up with in the future.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Marius :) I agree that if this were made into a soundtrack thing...it REALLY shouldn't last long! xD Thanks for the comment!

Wow I thought my piece, Jumping Low Over Rainbows, was bad, this is something else! I think this would be great for the people who are interested in death punk heavy metal, cause they're the ONLY ones who will ever listen to this and not notice the badness  So the race is on! I'll make sure to compose something so horrible, so attrocious, so ear-splittlingly bad that I will get kicked off this site. Good job!

Fascinating piece. I've listened to it several times in a row to try to hear all the different ideas under the distortion - but that's the fun. It made me edgy and uneasy and I loved every minute of it (even on the repeat listens). Good stuff, man.

Oh dear, like you say: This is NOT for everyone. hahha! I fell off my chair right now. ( I realize that I may have a bad chair-day too)

Mikable:

Wow, thanks! You really dug up a fossil with this one  Ah, the sweet memories  I'm glad you enjoyed it -- it's definitely my most hardcore, unrepentant-ly insane piece.

Danny:

Wow, same thing happened to Heckle  Twice! Sorry about that, although it's kind of funny this piece even knocks people off their chair...

Thank you both for commenting

This was really annoying... but still I like it...
