Dungeon Stealth

Featured Replies

This is some stealth/sneaking music written for a yet-to-be released game project I worked on a while back. Away from the context of the game it may seem rather repetitive. Two main motives here: The first taken by the solo violin (and later by the brass quartet) is the "dungeon" motif which is encountered in its full form in the next "chapter" of the game. The second being the falling tritone motive in the pizzicato violins which has been heard earlier in the game that represents a group of villains.

Neat. I don't really have too much to comment on without further context of what's going on in the game. What you have sounds sneaky at the beginning as you indicated. The end is interesting as well, sort of a carnivale kind of sound to it that I don't hear too often. Thanks for submitting this, and let's hear another work when you get a chance to upload.

Be sure to look around the forums and comment on other people's works as well. Welcome to YC!

Hi L,

It's great to see another game music composer around here — welcome aboard! :D

To your piece: I understand what you're going for here in terms of a very minimalistic and moody underscore for a sneaky scene, but my listening experience may not have been what you intended for so I will describe it for you. I felt that the pauses between your statements in the first bit were extremely long and distracting. Because there's no ambience underneath, and no other musical element going on, every time your music appeared and disappeared again, I noticed it — and I shouldn't, because it's distracting me from the hypothetical in-game experience. Hopefully you see what I mean.

Anyway, musically speaking it's not bad. Very simplistic — more than is necessary as far as I'm concerned — but not bad. Personally, I would have thickened up the textures a bit to give the track a bit more coherence and presence. You do this toward the end when you have the dorky march rendition come in, but some extra support to the rest would not have gone amiss. Perhaps if it was rendered through some better samples, with a bit more personality, the track would feel less disjointed and static, but as it is my impressions were not as positive as you'd've liked.

Nevertheless, it's a solid effort and I'd be curious to hear more of the work you've done for the project — please share! :)

Thank you both for the welcome, and taking the time to listen to the little (but long/repetitive) piece. :)

Marius: Thanks for the criticism, and suggestions. Sadly that music is already "out-the-door". I will keep those in mind as I work on other things. I was hesitant joining this board because I wasn't sure if this was just going to be a place where someone shares something and everybody is "hurray"-like. Indeed, my ideal hope was that it would be an incubator/ place of learning and I am happy to see that it is. I am excited to upload some more music to get some more great criticism and become better at what I wish to do, and do the same to others the help them accomplish their goals.

My pleasure! It's great to hear that you're planning on contributing commentary and more pieces to the site — that's what we're all about.

I agree with Marius: parts of it are very sparse, with the ultra-soft pizz of the violin, and then the violin screeching up right afterwards: it's very distracting! Dx

I'm glad to hear you've moved on to greener pastures in the meantime, I'd love to hear what else you'll come up with :)

Thanks for sharing, and Welcome to Young Composers! I hope you find future criticism and comments helpful! :D

I thought I commented on this!!! Anyway I'll comment now :)

I liked this. A good sparse start with the lovely tension building with pizz. and that high violin. It's a pity that you overdid that though, because it started to feel too brokenup. I also thought it was slightly repettive, but it would probably be OK in a game!! I half expected a big orchestral roll coming after a tremelo. It's good to see you advoided that pitfall for a "ambient sneak music" Look forward to seeing another work from you :)
