January 10, 201016 yr Neat, would work nice in a film, specifically at a high drama point. One can feel the ebb and flow here.
January 10, 201016 yr Author Thanks! Still needs ALOT of work with the balance and reverb etc. but it is a start..
January 11, 201016 yr Hi JemGray! First off, welcome to YC! Regarding your piece, I am getting a cinematic vibe from it, but it's rather unpolished, especially in terms of the production/mixing side of things. I appreciated your use of guitar and especially piano (I'm a pianist, got a soft spot :P ), but the integration with the rest of the ensemble seemed a bit rough around the edges...like those instruments were poking out a bit. You have some neat counterlines going on in the later parts of the piece, and overall the middle section is far more coherent-sounding than the beginning. It actually vaguely reminds me of a number of Eastern JRPGs, so if you happen to like that style or be familiar with it, you can take that as a compliment or not as you see fit. You should be aware, by the way, that the audio file seems to be more than seven minutes long, while your piece only fills about 3:40 — might want to trim the excess off next time. I want to comment on your mixing as I think it's the weaker part here. Your writing is fine, and with better samples and production this would be a far more solid track. As it is, you haven't quite balanced out the instruments' volume levels too well, so you end up with individuals (like the piano and guitar) singing out way louder than the rest. While this is possible with close-micing in real life, the effect is not as pronounced as you have it here, so I would go back and check your volumes to make sure that all your sections are better integrated. Some extra sequencing polish would also help immensely; this sounds like it was produced using notation software (Finale/Sibelius/Notion/etc.), not a proper sequencer (Cubase/Logic/Sonar/etc.) — is that true? If so, you may want to consider doing your writing in the notation only, and then working on the actual audio production side of things in a dedicated sequencer. The results will be infinitely more refined. Either way, a nice contribution. Thank you for sharing it and I hope you will continue posting and commenting on the works of your peers!
February 26, 201016 yr Very nice work, I'm especially fond of the guitar's say in the piece: it just seems to resonate well for some reason ;) I think with some volume adjustments (as Marius said), it would be fine! I think the panning is basically ok, so that's really my only complaint :P Thanks for sharing, this was really nice work! :D Also, welcome to Young Composers! I hope you find our suggestions and comments helpful to you :)
February 27, 201016 yr Jem Welcome to YC. I agree with the above. We all hit a point where we have a pretty good idea of what we want to project musically, at that point we have to delve more into the production side of things to get it to sound top notch. This would benefit from some tweaking. Nicely composed Ron
February 28, 201016 yr Welcome JemGray!! SOme tweaking with the production will help. A sequencer will be the difference from musicians liking this work, and the general public liking this work. This doesn't sound like MIDI though......am I hallucinating?? OTOH, cool orchestration, and hope to hear more of your works :)
March 1, 201016 yr The sounds aren't all that great, but i really do like this piece a lot. My favorite part has to be the motif around 1:23. Those notes over the rising chord progression really hits me in the right spot. Definitely my favorite section in the whole piece. If it was developed more I think this piece would be a favorite.
March 1, 201016 yr I really liked this, specifically the piano. -Marius got me hooked on piano segments in music, I wonder why :P- The woodwinds along with the strings add a sense of vastness or longing/hope. Something drama-filled is about to happen in a movie<- is what I am getting from this. The descending scales used throughout the different section reminded me of some other pieces I heard last year. I really like the sound they make. I enjoyed this.
March 1, 201016 yr I really like the harmony between the guitar and the piano, nice work! For points of critique, I can't really add anything to what's already been said.
