My name isn't actually Morty, but I figured it would be a decent pseudonym, since Morton Feldman is one of my favorite composers. I guess if I were to single out a few of my favorite composers, it would go something like... Feldman, Charles Ives, Steve Reich, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane (particularly his later work, from A Love Supreme to Ascension-era work), Rahsaan Roland Kirk (native of my hometown!), Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys (Anyone who doesn't believe he deserves his place among the great American composers of the 20th century is crazy), Tom Verlaine of Television, and Sly Stone. So yeah, a wide variety, but I'm never sure if my dabbling ever sounds like any of these people, but that's fine by me. I play guitar, piano, and alto sax, and I also know my way around a steel drum. Right now I'm in high school, and I definitely want to study music in college, but I'm not sure if it would be composition or jazz studies or musicology or what. So... yeah. Hi.

Welcome to the forum.

Interesting mix of influences you have there ;)

I'm Bazz, a 20 yearold sophmore going to school around Boston at Umass Lowell. I love music, play guitar/piano, and most recently have begun putting up my solo works on youtube.com/imyourbazz.

I also just started a new band, we are currently looking for a lead singer and undecided on a name as of now but it's gonna be sweet I'll say that much! Least if we find a good voice :D

Um thats about it. Check ya later dudes!

Hi I'm Newport, not quite a "young composer", but not quite a "decrepit composer"! I've been involved in music in some way or another for most of my life. Starting off by learning brass (dropped in at the deep end by being "volunteered" to play in the school's carol concert only 2 days after starting to learn - the less said the better). i played in a brass band for quite a few years before learning electric bass and then joining local groups and playing pubs & clubs. During this time Iwrote pieces for myself, but it is only over the last few years that I have been composing in a more classical style. I must say that this forum has restored my faith in music. It is so encouraging to hear so many gifted young people composing some fantastic work. Long may it continue!

Hello everyone, i´m jason, and i´m trying hard to become a musician. . .

I like many stuffs, beyond music, like writing( a novel) watching movies/animes reading.

I play guitar, harmonica, sing, learning piano, and looking forward to buy an oud.

The artists, wich i identify myself more with are: Jeff Buckley, Matthew Bellamy. And from books it´s Stephen King.

Hello there.

My name is Kirsti. I'm 17, a senior in high school, and I just started composing.

I only just started playing music when I was 15, the clarinet. Now, I play tenor sax, some piano, and a little violin. I know I'm a late bloomer as far as wanting to go into music goes, but my passion for music and creating music runs deep and I won't stop in the face of adversity, even though I haven't been playing/composing for long.

Of course, I'm always open to any advice and I'm willing to make new friends and learn a bit while I'm here.

:)

I've only written one complete piece, and I know it's really short and simple, but I'm proud of it. :)

Hope you'll take a listen.

so here we go again:

Hi there,

<_< I am 32 and from Ireland. I have been composing for 15 years. I am interested to see what younger composers are doing and I would love to share some of my own music and ideas here. Places where composition is nurtured like this is not easy to find. Hope to meet some like-minded folks :)

thanks

Jaime

Good evening everybody,

This will be long. You don't have to read it.

I am a real young composer. As a teenager I used to write songs to be performed at school events. Then my career as math professor took all my time. I retired six years ago and found boxes full of my early sins. I started again with my mac and modified my early songs to be performed by my grandsons. They were not interested. Wanted to know where the hard rock and the guitar are hiding. So I bought Sibelius some time ago and started my career as a composer. My grandsons persuaded me to buy a MIDI keyboard and now I have a lot of fun with that one. I am a fairly good pianist and my songs were all written for piano. Now I try to understand chamber orchestra techniques. My favorite style relates to early 20th century French tradition. I am now working on something like 20 pieces and I don't know when even the first one will be finished.

The big problem is that the more you learn the more difficult it gets. Now when I joined this group I am really aware of the enormous distance between what I am able to create and the really good things on this site. But I learn a lot and have a lot of time. The rules say that one has to write good English. I try to do my best using this for me foreign language.

That is all for tonight. Thank you for our attention (if someone stayed with me this far).

Leander

Welcome all new members, thank you for joining YC, I hope you find everything pleasent and feel free to contact anyone if you have a problem of any kind.

Hello. I've just tipped the iceberg in music, and I hope to learn things and get feedback that may help me get better at composing. I have a question, though. Whenever I go to the download database, it's very unstable and causes my broser to crash.

Can anybody explain?

Hello, and welcome!

The powers-that-be here have been hard at work remodeling the site (overhauling, actually) for months====. The whole site is basically a BETA right now...stick with us, and things will stabilise.

I have a question of my own: how is it that the spell-check function automatically underlined the word "stabilise" above (and HERE) as if it were misspelt? As well as the word misspelt? These are correct British spellings, are they not?

I'd assume an American site would use US English.

Even so, why would the assumption be that British spellings are incorrect? Makes no sense to me.

Hi, I'm Isabel from Bogotá, Colombia.

I'm studying viola and composition at the university... Some people say doing two majors at the same time is a crazy thing to do, but well, here I am, I have managed to survive somehow :P

I'm in love with my instrument. As many of us violists, I started with the violin first, and then some kind of epiphany took me to the cool side of the force ;) (just kidding, violinists out there, you know there are too many cruel viola jokes, so we have to fight back sometimes, for proving we're not the "dumb cousin" of string instruments :P).

My favorite composer is Karlheinz Stockhausen, I have analysed many of his works, have most os his music, read most of his interviews... If there were Zippos or t-shirts with him on them I would surely have them

I also like to listen to many types of music, I'm interested in knowing the most varied forms of organizing sound... From Spectralism to Jazz, from Mambo to Metal, from Björk to Fausto Romitelli, etc.

Nice to meet you.

HOla Isabel Bienvenida... (I have to continue in english)

Welcome to YC, a lady who likes Stockhausen, and joining this site, ... ohmy.gif that's something doesn't happen everyday,

I invite you to visit the "Upload your compositions...." -> "Electronic" forum, I'm sure you'll find some interesting pieces.

Now that you mention you have listened much of Stockhausen, do you know where can I listen "Oktophonie" ? (a website maybe ?)

Hello everyone, Billy here. 20 years old born in MA, living in Hawaii for school. (psychology major/philosophy minor)

Composing music is a pretty big hobby of mine, but nothing much more than just a hobby. I like writing orchestral and film style compositions, though the only musical training I have is 8 years on guitar, and only 1 year of lessons. I dont listen to classical music much either. Before I got into these composing styles I was (and still am) a big fan of progressive metal, and other heavy, instrumentally technical bands. I know very little of standard notation and have gone from writing in guitar TABs to piano rolls. I know how this can make some composers cringe.... but it works for me, and lets me get my ideas down to something tangible without the need for classes and teaching that i will never use in my career. I love the variety and challenge that VST's present when it comes to writing music for instruments ive rarely heard let alone played.

Hey... I'm 15 from NZ and I just uploaded my first composition recently (http://www.youngcomposers.com/pg/video/pterodactyl_child/composition?entry=28680 :phones: ). I look forward to uploading some more soon. Yes... and my name's Ben... That probably should have been my opening line .

Good day to all! Im Mariang Palad from the Philippines. I love to play different musical instruments like guitar, drums, piano and harmonica.I really wanna learn(about music) something new with you guys!

Im not really good in english that is why Im going to end "THIS" now.....

Hey there! My name is Meredith, and I've been podcasting my experimental music and sound design (among other, sillier things) for a while now, and I'm very excited to have found such an active community like this.

Hey Everyone!

My Screen name is Derrick Martin, which is what I'll be called here...hopefully :)

I am an Avid songwriter/composer/musician. Songwriter and composer are not the same thing you know...

I write for full band and soundtrack orchestra.

I am currently working on the soundtrack for my home movie thats not made yet, kinda weird but, who cares...

I am 16 almost 17...

I think this forum/website is totally cool... cant wait to get to compare music with some of you...

thanks

Derrick

Well, I got it from Soulseek, the sharing software... It's a good source for finding not-so-common works by XXth century composers. I certainly recommend it.

Thanks ... I got it already, but still, I'll check your site, Thank you.
