Hi everyone,

I've posted on this board a few times already, but haven't been here in a while (primarily because I was in the hospital) and haven't had the chance to introduce myself.

My name is Nick Scholten, from the Netherlands. I'm 17 and a harpist. I've been composing some bits and pieces (but nothing really serious) since I've started playing music. About half a year ago I started being more interested in classical music and composition then I had been before. This I think came partially because I joined an orchestra around that time.

The only things I've composed in the meantime are some arrangements of Celtic folksongs for harp and orchestra, producing very short concerto-like pieces. But in some cleanup I deleted them all because I didn't like how they turned out.

With composing I'd love to do some concerto's, symphonies and offcourse a ballet :) , but seriously my mind sometimes seems to explode with ideas/melodies etc. but I just can't seem to get them 'on paper'. Another problem I have is that I can't really afford a good music notation program. What I'm using right now is a copy of Finale with which I can't save or print, I work my way around that by using GNU LilyPond, but that can get extremely tedious, and the lack of a GUI makes it easy to make mistakes and only notice them much later on. Also, I can't playback anything once I've closed Finale.... I'm really interested in something that notates and plays back and which is free..

Okay, that's all I had to say, feel free to ask anything..

Hi, everyone.

I'm pretty new to this board (I haven't lurked around yet), so I have no idea what to expect here.

I'm 17 years old and I'm from the Netherlands. I primarily play classical guitar, but I also play jazz guitar and have some experience on keys. During my first year of guitar lessons (two years ago), I started to develop a serious interest in music theory and classical music. I bought books and read articles on harmony, composition and really got into 'the language of music'. When I first started composing pieces, I felt they were really childish and therefore got rid of them. Currently, I'm more confident working with themes by other composers and developing them, but I also write works entirely by myself.

My favourite composers are Bach, Mozart and Liszt, but I try not to imitate any one of them. My own compositions would fall into the 'common practice' category, that's the language which I feel is the most suitable to express my ideas.

Concerning form, I prefer working on small- and medium-sized pieces, like theme and variations, fugues (very hard though) or fantasies. I'm definitely not proficient enough to write and orchestra a concerto or symphony. The program I use to notate music is Sibelius - my handwriting just isn't as handsome as Liszt's.

I did consider studying music, but composing or playing guitar isn't something I want to do for a living. Next year I'm probably studying Physics, which I love too.

Hello all,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I've been into music on a hobby basis for a long time, but now taking more steps to deeper involvement. I have a broad interest in music, from classical to experimental with particular interest for Bach on one end of the spectrum to squarepusher on the other end. I also recently started a podcast called "Samples in Motion" which is all about soundsculptures, collaborative composing and the tools that were used. It is only just starting though - just feel free to check it out :D

Hey,

I look forward to working on this forum. I truly believe that initiatives like this are a great catalyst for sharing music experiences to an interested community.

Take care,

Serge

Hi! My name is Sean Hanson, and I've been composing for several years. This summer I was one of the 10 composers selected for the Interlochen Arts Academy. Will was another; you might know him...he wrote the funky contemporary piano suite in the larger piece section.

I'm currently auditioning for all kinds of conservatories, so I am not going to be posting music directly up. But if I mention something in a message, I'd be more than happy to let someone hear it if they just contact me. In some cases I'd be thrilled to send more than just the Finale file, but rather a nice live 8meg M4A. Hurrah.

I love theory, though I approach it as more of an examination process, not as a means to create. That is, unless I'm writing something more atonal to which I consider theory much more often...my "atonality" (really just a lack of a pitch center...I'm hardly atonal in any way) is much weaker than my tonality though.

Uh...a random composer fact to leave with i guess:

My favorite mode is the Mixolydian-Lydian! Sharp 4 Flat 7! And I take no guilt in putting both accidentals in my key signatures.

Aight'. Drop me a message, and I'll see people around.

Hello everyone. This is the 3rd music forum I've been to. ;)

Anyway, I've seen some pretty good pieces of work and thought I'd join.

Perhaps I should say something about myself...

I compose video game style music for my brother and composed my fist song at 5. (I still plan on using that melody somewhere.) I have impefect pitch and I hear voices! (maybe I didn't have to say that last bit) I hope to make some music friends here!

Please, I'd even prefer no accidentals at all to your solution :*(

Haha; yeah, I will admit right now that in my final versions I always use the key with the sharp 4, and put in the flats or naturals myself. That's my habit. Nonstandard key sigs make my life a little easier when I write it myself, though. I'm all about that shorthand. :D

Hi, my name is Melissa. I'm from Jersey. I am an utter music freak. I am a Baritone/Euphonium Player(There IS a difference between the two) I also play a couple others and sing. I've been involved with concert band, jazz band, brass ensemble, choir, pit orchestra, wind ensemble, a couple of honor bands, marching band and drum corps. I am currently a College Sophomore @ county college with plans to transfer in Spring 2006 to a 4 year school for special education with my subject matter as music. I got into composing when I was in the 7th grade and got more serious about it as I got into Highschool. It's something I really find enjoyable. I don't really compose anything specific just whatever comes to me at that specific moment. Ummm that is about it I guess....

My names Wolf. I probably wouldn't be adorned too much if I spoke about my personal life so... I guess you'll just find out!

More and more British Columbians all the time! Yay! Hello!

(I'm from there, although currently at college in the States.)

My names Wolf. I probably wouldn't be adorned too much if I spoke about my personal life so... I guess you'll just find out!

Why hello there! another wolf in here! we'll soon be making a horde in here!! :D

Random digression: anyone follow German soccer? A few years ago, the head coach at VfL Wolfsburg was a guy named Wolfgang Wolf. You just can't make this stuff up.

Kanwulf, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ulver, and also the Swedish common name Varg means wolf aswell.

Thanks Lehten :) :)

Hey, I'm Emma (as you probably guessed from the user name).

I'm from melbourne, Australia and i've only just got into composing. i got into it at school a bit this year an i was looking around the net for some info on music and found this site.

I play flute and piccolo mainly, and i'm also a classical singer.

Anyway, its good to know that there are other people out there who like composing and who still love a variety of genres :P

Hey, hey!!! What's up, everyone?

My name is Randy (21). I'm from Tulsa, Ok., but I'm living in San Antonio, TX right now. I've been surrounded by music all my life, but I didn't get involved until I was 13. I started as a Sound Tech for my church, then for my 18th birthday I began playing electric bass. I play, regularly, for my church F.Y.I. I also play for the Improvisational Music class at the community college I'm attending right now (Northwest Vista College). I started composing with finger-tapping bass solos, but after joining this class I started to compose for other instruments (mainly orchestratic and piano) at a phenomenal rate (at least for me). I wanted to go into Aerospace Engineering, but I debating over Music Performance and Music Composition instead. Well, that should be enough for now. If you would like to know more, just let me know. Glad to be apart of this experience.

Take care;

Randy

Salutations, Randy!

In fact, to everyone that i haven't saluted:

SALUTATIONS! I salute you all!

Hey everyone im Riverdaeum. I play alot of instruments but I mostly sing and play piano. I also like to write Piano Sonatas and I enjoy mostly Fantasies and Fugues. Im working on a Fantasy-Sonata for a play that someone asked me to write for. Its still in the beginning stages as I have many ideas for this piece.

I have decided to name the piece;

Traurige Phantasie Sonata (in E Minor).

hello, i am gustav, i am a 18 years old senior, i will graduate in 2006 i live on the westcoast of U.S, just north of Seattle. I compose music for the sake of enjoyment, just like i would play video games or chat with friends online.

i am not as serious about music as some of you, i see it as a hobby, i listen to classical music all the time, i have all the great symphonies (complete beethoven, complete mahler, Bruckner, shotakovich, schubert, r.strauss, j.struass, s.prokoviev, mozart, haydn, dvorak, tchaikovesky, wagner) on my laptop and i play them while i do my homework. I also have most of their works in score, so i could study them if i have time, but i still see music as a hobby, my true passion is physics, and i would like to major in engineering when i get to college.

a suggestion for many young composers on this website: Listen More Music!! and not just your favorite composer, but all the great composers, and not just once, but over and over again.
