Why Bother?

Many of these monthly competitions never get judged and the results are never shown. I entered two in the past here that were cancelled because the results were never given. Now the two last ones I've entered(November/December)have not yet posted results, one is a month past the promised results, the other two months.

Why bother using time and energy entering these if the host cannot post the results?

Hi everyone,

I made a post discussing the delay in monthly competitions in the reviewers forum and everyone seemed in agreement with me, so I would like to suggest/enforce new rules for the monthly competitions and see if everyone is on board. As of now November competition results have not been posted. This is unfair to the competitors and does not generate excitement for monthly competitions. These should be a bigger deal and more fun to be involved in. More people will apply if results are shown.

So, here are the rules I suggest:

1. All judging must be done by 7 days after contest MAXIMUM.

2. Results must be posted within 10 days after contest MAX.

3. If these are not met, people assigned as forum reviewers or moderators will take over for the non-responding person.

This means that worst case scenario, the host does not finish the job, three reviewers will vote and post the results.

Anyone opposed? If not, I suggest we start this with the earliest competition to catch up on this IMMEDIATELY.

These are the rules, true?

I know as a reviewer I rarely offer to judge because it is so much work. Therefore I do not commit so as not to disappoint.

Sorry to hear about your experiences Bachian. I hope you still post the pieces in the appropriate forum. I think the best competitions have been the ones where it is limited to one judge and the judge sets a deadline for results and cut off. SSC did a fun one - the bad music competition.

Abadoss does some nice ones though I think his parameters are a bit broad - yet since the style he asks for is fairly specific and the contests center around atmospheric renderings of literary ideas, it works.

I recall my organ competition - my big mistake was the parameters were too specific and the info I gave was overwhelming. Yet Jimmyjuicin did a nice job for a first organ piece.

Good to see you here Bachian!

Personally I think that a monthly composer's competition is too much of the good thing. I am a slow composer, partly because I am absorb by my studies, partly because it takes me a time before I sit down and actually write something, chewing and rechewing things before I take the pain of writing them down. This way, I resemble, I think it must be either Gershwin or Britten, whose mother said: "if it is good, it will stay in your mind until the next day, so now go to sleep".

Secondly: a monthly composition takes the thrill of composing for a competition out of the game. Every month there is a winner, so what is the importance of having gain a contest on Young Composers.

Thirdly: why not award the winner a PDF-certificate that he won such and such prize in such and such competition?

Fourthly: competitions are announced too late in my opinion.... August should have already been announced as it is already the middle of July. Once again it has to do with the time issue.

Just some random thoughts

I think that the rule of the reviewers and moderators should be more strict. We shouldn't be blabbering around waiting for months and months just to hear the results because some one person was no longer active! It would be easier if we just went, okay, judging not done after 7 days, time to have a few reviewers and mods come and judge. And if the results aren't posted, one of those mods of reviewers who judged the piece will post the results by day 10.

Just a thought...

I like the idea of being watched more closely. I think one of the moderators needs to devote themselves fully to this sub-forum to watch it and make sure everything goes as planned, like Morivou did. Or the staff could select someone reliable if no moderator is able to. It doesn't have to be a promotion or anything - just a duty.

@ Wolfgang - What's the point of having MONTHLY competitions if it is not held during a MONTH.

Yes..I (and others) established these rules a long time ago..I have had a hiatus to the forum over the summer and apparently those in charge of the competitions have not been doing their job...Remember that this is a public forum, but still those running the competitions should have the decency to make sure they are judged.
