Rialto Ripples Live - 1921

Featured Replies

My arrangement of Rialto Ripples mixed to sound like it was from the 20's. =)

Rialto Ripples Live - 1921

Gershwin would be proud, good arrangement btw. Would have fooled me for the most part.

Lol. It's mind-games, Gamma.

Thanks for the post,

-John

Nice arrangement! The tune functions well at this tempo, and you never really hear it played this way. This arrangement swings along. One thing about the audio, though - it would sound more convincing if you: equalize out the high frequencies, then make the audio mono, and add record hiss and pops in stereo format. That way it'll sound just like a transfer of a record sort of like I did with this: new_windowThe Mule Walk

Regardless, I really liked your arrangement. The sectional "shout" sections are terrific, and I like the solos you wrote in.

Best regards,

Max.

Nice work here. You're consistent, you have good orchestration, and your harmonies, while more traditional, do exactly what you want them to. This rendering sounds weak on the percussion, though... I like that the midi makes it sound like you have an accordion at first!

You touch on a good point. The percussion sounds really weak with the old record feel because the effect removes pretty much all of the bass sounds and left just the treble.

That was supposed to be an accordion. :P

Strangely enough, I was singing Black Orpheus in my head today. I forgot the name of the tune  but just 2 hours ago at a jazz rehearsal, my friend reminded me of the title...and then you commented on my piece! Nice coincidence.

Thanks for the comment, Black Orpheus.

You know what is great, I had this tune, your arrangement playing in my head for about 2/3's of the day.

Thanks a lot, Gamma! I'm glad it stuck with you.

Btw, congratulations on placing third in the November competition, Gamma.

Good night,

-John

Good! It's hard to tell with midi sometimes. Throw in guitar and violin and you might even sound like Django Reinhardt.

Sweet, it's a great tune. Also called Manha de Carnaval.

@Black Orpheus

I'm checking out a vocal trio plus guitar play the song with a German symphony behind them.

It's very cool.

RagtimeMax, I completely overlooked your post. I'm so sorry!

Thank you very much for your comments. The one part about audio has me a little confused. So, if I was to break it down into steps:

Step 1: EQ out the high frequencies. Ok.

Step 2: Make the audio mono. So everything would be coming out of the centre channel, right?

Step 3: Add record hiss and pops in stereo format. Do you mean, I'll have hiss coming out of the left channel and maybe pops coming out of the right one?

Step 4: Listen to the Mule Walk. I shall!

Thanks for your insight, Max

-John

You got the audio part mostly right - I'll clarify:

-EQ down the high frequencies

-make all the tracks into Mono (centre channel) tracks

- add a seperate track of hiss, in stereo [using some plugin like the free "iZotope vinyl" plugin]

This simulates the effect one gets when recording a Mono record into stereo on the computer.

The link I had posted didn't work, sorry. I'll try again: http://ragtimeguy.webs.com/The_Mule_Walk.mp3

I'd love to hear what you could do with that effect on this nice arrangement!

Best of luck,

Max.

Max, that sounds soooooo good. You wrote that?

It's sooooo fun. I'm quite tired now, so my vocabulary's a bit small. If I was more awake, I'd describe this as that kind of happy nostalgia you feel when you hear an old piece or play an old game. It's quite charming as well. I love the high notes playing triplets in the last minute of your piece. I'm a huge fan of rag and I think your piece represents the genre beautifully. I'd use the word quintessential to describe it but remember that I'm tired and I'm not exactly sure where I'd that word in a sentence. :P

I'll have a look at this iZotope vinyl plugin. I'm not sure if my time is best spent creating these fake versions of tunes recorded on the computer. I shared this old record effect with my father and he said that you can't hide fake instruments under a fake mastering. That was what I was originally trying to do: cover up the synthetic midi sounds with a fancy little effect. I think it worked to a point. Nevertheless, if I'm going to try this effect again, it will be with a live recording.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Max. Was that a live piano recording or a midi file?

Peace on Earth,

-John

  • 2 weeks later...

When I listened to it has recollected mega-cool game Mafia! The sound is similar to the live

My piece reminded you of Mafia or Ragtime Max's piece did?
