Piece for Solo Flute

Featured Replies

A short piece for solo flute, written as part of my course (BMus in composition).

Piece for Solo Flute

Very nice job! The recording is excellent because you played it, there's emotion instead of robotic, synthesized notes. This definitely would show off the skills of a great flautist. Without saying, it shows of your skills as a great composer. :)

Welcome to YC!

Beautiful work, and what a great recording!

Your score can be easily interpreted but it's rather messy. Clean up your collisions, align your dynamics, align your tempo markings, and make sure your slurs are flipped in the right position (if even one note is stem down under the slur then the slur will most likely go over the notes), then you'll have a great score too.

Beautiful ! I will favourite this. It is not easy to write for a solo instrument and you pulled it off so well. It is as effective as Debussy's Syrinx - the classic example of great solo flute writing. The playing is also expressive. I love the slight modal/orientalism. In fact it sounds a little French too. I am very impressed.

Nice piece and nice recording! Usually I don't like something until my second listen, but in this there were moments during the first time I listened where I would go "Oooo that was nice". Good job!

Great job with this and excellent playing. Very nice and pretty exploring here. I would like to hear more of your work and hope that you use the same sensitivity in your ensemble compositions. What year in your program are you and where do you attend? (If you don't mind disclosing). If I have a criticism of the piece it is that I would have liked to hear it take on at least one more style at some point. I feel it is much of the same throughout, which is fine but perhaps not as interesting as it could be. However, writing solo music is probably the hardest thing to do. I have never done it very well and think you do a fine job here. Very nice! As stated, you need to clean up the score. As a comp major, you can't underestimate the importance of professional looking music if you plan on composing for a living.

Goodness gracious! :o

This is just incredible! Your ability as a flute player is remarkable, to be able to craft a genuinely interesting and beautiful solo flute piece! Bravo, sir, bravo!

And the way you play it gives it so much character, too: it all flows very well, and I never felt bored or embarrassed listening to this.

Favorite and 10/10 :D Thank you for sharing!

Hey guys,

thanks very much for you kind comments, I really appreciate them!

Maestro Thank you for listen and comment. Luckily I managed to get the piece recorded in a workshop, it makes a massive difference and I would say to any composer that they should always try to get their works played. It's well worth getting to know some musicians who will be willing to play your pieces!

Black Orpheus I will clean up the score as you said it is rather messy!

Jaime Thanks a lot. I've been listening to a lot of Debussy recently, but I also wanted to give it an eastern feel. I guess this is why it sounds a bit like a cross between Debussy and Rimsky-Korsakov, but that's basically what I was aiming for!

Masked Trumpeter I'm glad I managed to make you go 'oooh'! :P Actually, making people go oooooh is one of the reasons I write! Thanks for commenting!

Benxiwf I'm at the Royal Academy of music in my first year. I'm actually 3 years older than my 1st year colleagues and I suppose this does give me an advantage to a degree, although the standard of the other composers work is very high. I originally applied to study Music Tech and then went on to study Music at Sussex, which is why it's taken me a few years to get here. Anyway, it's a great place to study, very open-minded although they do focus on very contemporary music much of the time. However, they do allow you to pretty much write in any style you wish, which suits me down to the ground!

SergeOfArniVillage Thanks for commenting, but I should point out that I didn't actually play the piece myself, due to the fact that I... can't. But I was very pleased with the performance and the recording itself was very good.
