Suspended Adoration

Featured Replies

Meant to have a sad or solemn mood to it. I imagine some sort of cut scene in which an unpleasant truth is being revealed about a loved one... Comments and constructive criticism encouraged.

Nice piece, really!

When I first listened to it, though I thought the cello sounds pretty awful ;-) But that's just the samples, probably. But maybe you could keep the volume down a bit, it sort of smashes into your quiet (but very beautiful) piano background. The cello would probably also sound better with a bit more reverb.

I especially like the ending, really beautiful fade out!

I suppose you can't post a score, can you? Would be interesting to see, I find your melody lines a bit confusing sometimes.

But it's a pretty piece, thanks for sharing!

well the cello is deffo too loud. and the flute or whatever that was, couldn't make it out.

You have a beautiful harmony going on, but I feel the melody is too complicated at times... less is more ;)

none the less, great work, you just need to work on mastering some more, I think it even clips at times.

I just realized that "clipping" was an error that happened when I was converting the file to MP3. I re-uploaded the file so there is no longer that annoying clip. Thanks for the feedback though!

The melodic instruments respectively are piano and "warm pad" to start out, the cello comes in, followed by oboe, followed by flute. And then obviously a harp comes along. Sorry i don't have a score, I don't really have a program to notate with, nor do I know how to properly notate.

YOu're definately inproving here!! This shows marked development from the last one you post. I didn't really notice the melodies conflicting much, as a ambiant theme, this works really well.

Follow what others have already said here, and keep composing (with some work, this will be really awesome ;))

Nice piece

The cello seems a bit static from time to time and could benefit with a bit more cc work.

But that could also just be the samples not having enough depth.

Ron

Billy,

I really enjoyed this. I think some more polish on the sequencing side of things would help the overall realism, as Ron was suggesting, and I also think the mixing needs a bit of work (the reverb is making it sound muddy, and the instruments need to be properly placed on the virtual stage). Beyond that though, the writing is great for an unobtrusive little cue. Very reminiscent of the softer scenes in many Japanese-style RPGs.

Kepp writing, and keep sharing them with us. You'll keep improving as you continue to write.

Just updated the song very slightly. took some peoples advice. Added a very slight reverb to the cello and toned its volume down just a bit. also added a little bit of panning to separate the instruments better.

I <3 the description.

What libraries are you using for the cello? Have you tried EWQLSO Free-Edition? It's only got 20 instruments but they're pretty good and free.

I love the pacing in this piece. The way you move from the thicker textures at 2:13 to only three instruments and then just to two was lovely. Your little cymbals rolls throughout the piece were really effective too.

Here's a little nitpick about your flute line. Being a wind instrument, it needs to take breaths. If you physically put in quarter rests at the end of each 2 or 4 bar flute phrase, it will sound like its phrased more naturally. Here's a couple places where I think it could work well:

  • Right before 2:19, you just had a really long note. That's a perfect time for a breath.
  • Right before 2:34, same deal.

Is there a slight delay on some of the instruments at the beginning? Kinda going, KAH KAH KAH KAH? Experiment with bringing it out a little more. It's cool. If it's not there, try adding it and see what you get.

Great work, Billy,

-John

Yes there is a very subtle percussion line throughout the piece only playing short little sounds on the accents. and yes it does have a delay on it. If you use headphones its usually more audible than through speakers. I didnt want it to be too naticeable as to distract from the piece, i kind of wanted it to be one of those atmospheric things you dont notice, but still adds to the feel of the song subconciously.

About the flutes, yeah i understand what you mean. I am aware about the breathing but was told once by a teacher that flute players would know when to take breaths, so you shouldn't have to write the pauses for them.

And about the cello thing... there is a free EWQLSO sample!!!!!????!?! I have been admiring the sounds of EWQLSO and have been wishing i could have anything from it, especially strings! I will check it out right after i finish typing this! the cello i used was just a stock VST that comes with my $70 program Acoustica Mixcraft.

Thanks!

Free anything is cool. Free EWQLSO is awesome.

Regardless of whether you're righting in the breathing spots for the flute or not, a recording of a floutist will still have breaths between phrases.

I got the free EWQLSO, but there doesn't seem to be just a cello in there. The only cello appears to be coupled with a violin, so it sounds more like "strings" than just cello. It doesn't really work for me in this piece so much. But other than that, its great to have the sounds for future pieces!

Trusay. It doesn't give you that solo cello sound that you want. But, whenever you want cello and violin, you now have a pretty good sound!

Peace on Earth,

-John
