2nd piano sonata, movement 1

Featured Replies

This is my second piano sonata, titled the "Golden Anniversary". I wrote it between December 2007 and February 2008 specially for the 50th, Golden, wedding anniversary of my parents; this sonata is dedicated to them. This is the second part: Moderato, molto espressivo.

The opening kind of underwhelmed me, but the body of the piece at :30ish, onward, is very nice: sort of grand and romantic! I think your parents will be very pleased with this ;)

But I'm don't see why through-out the piece, you sort of return to that kind of simplistic sound that you had at the beginning, and then switch back and forth between that and the more poignant, powerful parts of the piece. It makes it sound somewhat uneven, don't you think? :hmmm:

All-in-all, good work! :)

Thanks!

The switching back and forth is because of repeating the exposition. I thought more often about this and will take out this repetition, I believe it will work much better then.

And yes, my parents were very happy indeed!

sounds like a mix of bach and early scriabin. it is quite contrapuntal with shapes very baroque sounding in the opening. it is quite passionate too and you handle that well enough. maybe a litte more harmonic variety and not sure about the loud chords - it is grand as serge said and maybe too 'grand'. it is well put together though :Phones:

I would agree with the first poster. The beginning is not the best but after that is excellent - I look forward to more of your works.

Without a score of this, it's very difficult to analyze. I hear a lot of basic harmony hear and then some wonderfully rich dissonant chords around 1:00. Those are very reminiscent of Debussy. All in all, I think you have a nice work here. I wouldn't really worry about the interjection of your first idea (exposition). It's not really a lot of repetition to overly saturate the piece but I think enough to tie it all together. Very nice work. Thanks for sharing.
