The piano version of a theme for my video game character named Moire (Mo-ee-ray). Throughout the game her personality changes dramatically, from a lethal soldier to a softer, more emotional being.

I liked the opening of this but after a little bit I started to drift away from listening because the rhythm became static. Perhaps adding a few bass notes to change the rhythm there might help a bit.

Thanks, rolifer, I totally agree with you. It does get a little bland towards the end because of the rhythm. I've always thought this myself, but needed a second opinion, which is why I posted it.

Good thing this is only the basis of what it will really be like once I orchestrate it. I plan to go back and adjust the things that you commented on.

To give further insight into this song.. I finally found the original picture that inspired this theme, and the character.

You also said your character evolves from a harsh to a more soft person. Is this theme supposed to describe that?

Because I felt like this theme was rather depicting her softer side.

This is a very nice character theme. I don't think it fits the character description you mentioned at all (at least in my mind, or certainly not both sides of her), but it's still pleasant to listen to. I found the ending to be a bit abrupt and I think the largest fault overall is the production, which lacks humanity.

Your sequencing is at fault, because the piano sample itself is quite a good one. The problem lies in the fact that it's all extremely rigid and mechanical in terms of tempo and key velocities and note on/off times. It's just very static and plodding, and no human performer would ever interpret it like this. Therefore, while the sound quality itself is nice, the mock-up just isn't convincing because it still sounds like a MIDI performance.

Overall it's a good piece, and I have no real problems with the writing, so if you want to spend some more time polishing up the MIDI sequencing then I think you'll have a lovely piece on your hands...whether or not it matches the character it's for.

@Nicrion: Sorry for not being clear. This is supposed to play at a pivotal point (for her) in the game where she realizes that the person she loves will never be with her. During this small scene she learns to except this. So yeah, this is her "soft" side peaking through. Musically, the mood of her theme changes dramatically throughout the game.

@Marius: I'll see what I can do. Ideally, this will be performed and recorded by the time the game needs the actual music. Right now, my friend and I are just in the story development phase. However, I'm still curious as to how to make a proper mock-up.. I'm still new at this. I myself, don't play piano that good, so I'm not sure how it should sound. :hmmm:

Anama, cool piece.

Marius wouldbe better suited to giving you intricacies, but making a proper mockup, the best situation is to have a MIDI keyboard to bang out velocities, as you can "play the composition as it's meant to be played". The actual notes aren't too important at this stage, but the rhythm and volume is, so if you're not a piano maestro, focus on a natural rhythm and wanted volume (bang a few notes repeatedly at the right velocities) If you are too cheap to have a MIDI keyboard, like I am :P , then you have to do it the manuel way. Edit every single note individually, cut a bit off, exaggerate tempo, flourish a section. Much of this will come to you as time goes on.

This piece is brilliant, it's just the sequencing that needs more work.

Note: It doesn't sound like Sibelius, so I presume you have a DAW. However, if not, you need one for a conviincing mockup.

Thanks CheeseLord, I never thought of just using my keyboard as a workhorse for velocity. For some reason I always had it in my mind that I had to actually play the song. :P

I definitely adjusted the velocity on each note as I composed it, but obviously it wasn't very realistic. :lol: I'll be honest and say that I tend to keep it under half for this particular sample (GPO) because in my opinion it sounds unrealistic above this level. I bet if I actually adjust the volume on each track, I can make it more convincing and still keep the "sweet" sound of the sample. I was also lazy about the tempo, so I need to go back and shape that as well.

Very nice piece! I really like the motion that it has. The lead is very interesting and keeps me listening. Nice attention to velocity.

The beginning is very peaceful. I get a Final Fantasy feel from this.

I really liked this. Don't know if it fits the characters description or not but nonetheless the music is pretty superb.
