March 26, 201016 yr High adventure!Tanks everyone who has commented in the pas few days. I have read all your comments carefully and evolved greatly this past week thanks to you. This is just me fooling around, trying out new things. I really like the theme in this song and hopefully will compose it better and better. Jake's quest
March 29, 201016 yr HIGH HO! Nice melodies and harmonies. The drums could be a little louder overall. Your samples sound pretty good, but I don't think you're using them to the best of their abilities. They still sound a bit unrealistic. Work on sequencing them and you're piece will have an added layer of realism Quieting down at 1:48 was an excellent choice. No one can listen to a lot of intense music without giving your ears a quick break. The ending feels really unsatisfying ending on just one note. Your main rhythm is two eighth notes. Why not have two eighth notes at the end? Plus, if you built up to the final two notes with some crescendoing percussion or brass rhythmic figure, it would give end a conclusive feeling. Well done, Jake! Your tracks are definitely improving. Peace on Earth, -John
March 29, 201016 yr Author Thanks John. What do you mean by sequencing them? Is it they are playing too high/low notes for what they are made for? I hear you on the ending, but I kind of did that on purpose, just wanted to give the song a feel of "what? Oh, you were lisntening, well that's nothing for the tinkgs to come..." Do you get me? Probably not, I don't. Things I've noticed are that many instruments have a too fast attack and release. For instance at 0:27 the sting "emerges", which I like. The horns and other strings do not, which gives me a quite unsatisfying feel. Must have been to lazy to fix this. It does not run smooth all the way. I don't really like the beginning and the transisions between the different parts, except for the quiet part in the middle. Anyone agree, or am I way off?
March 30, 201016 yr By sequencing them, I mean looking at each midi event and adjusting the velocity and duration of the notes so that they sound as real as possible. If you look at your velocities right now, I think a lot of them will be the same. The transitions between the different parts aren't too bad. I think they flow pretty smoothly. kind of did that on purpose, just wanted to give the song a feel of "what? Oh, you were lisntening, well that's nothing for the tinkgs to come..." Do you get me? Probably not, I don't Are you saying you did it to surprise us? Let me know, Peace on Earth, -John
March 30, 201016 yr Author I hear you John... Have to get a pressure sensitive midi I think. Doing it all manually takes a long time, thanks for clarifying it to me. I'll start working right now. Hope you'll listen to the next version?
March 30, 201016 yr Of course! A pressure sensitive midi keyboard is the way to go, Jake. It must be frustrating to insert every note manually. Peace on Earth, -John
April 2, 201016 yr There's progress here for sure. I like your sense of development, and you're layering things nicely. I won't comment on the production side of things for now because you've still got a bunch of work to do with your writing skills. I think right now it would be helpful for you to start exploring new and different orchestrational colours. Layer different instruments in different ways, explore new combinations, try to put together unique and compelling sounds from the tools you've got. Don't lock yourself into tradition if you don't have to. Keep working either way, you're making good progress. :) And keep commenting on peoples' work around here, everyone appreciates the shared attention and feedback.
