May 25, 200620 yr I don't know exactly what to say about this piece...I composed it for a friend, and that's about it... Love_Prelude.mid
May 25, 200620 yr This does not belong in the Major Works section, that's for sure. As for the piece, I don't know what to say also. Repetition is evil. I skipped around the piece and it sounded the same everywhere. There is no melodic line!
May 26, 200620 yr Well, I concider it a Major work. I guess it's all a matter of perspective here. Also repetition, for me repetition is everything. Thats how you get people to remember your music. But i say, what ever works for you, do it.

But i say, what ever works for you, do it. According to forum guidelines, a major work is a work of considerable lenght and quality: and repetition is, well, everything BUT everything. Anyone call tell you that. Anyone with EXPERIENCE, that is.
May 26, 200620 yr repetition is, well, everything BUT everything. Anyone call tell you that. Anyone with EXPERIENCE, that is. Anyone with experience, you say? More like anyone with a closed mind. Why does everyone on this forum seem to have a stick up their donkey? Lighten up, geez.
May 26, 200620 yr Exactly! i THOUGHT THAT THE RULES SAID "BE NICE". Not insult people's music, just because it's diffrent. Whats so wrong with diffrence...It seems every single one of you (few exeptions) Write the same piece of music, over and over and over and over again. And you tell ME I repete too much. At least I try to make my music original, new stuff, FRESH! Unlike most of you...

At least I try to make my music original, new stuff, FRESH! Unlike most of you... Saying it's not a Major Work is insulting? You must think of your music a little too highly. What's so fresh about your music? I hear that kind of music all the time on TV adds, elevators and reception offices. It's everything but fresh and original. Yes, you repeat too much, and I'm only being honest. Minimalism is, indeed, repeating, but not just repeating two chords constantly: it can get quite complex. Oh, and if you say we write the same stuff all over, then one can guess you simply dislike classical music in general.

At least I try to make my music original, new stuff, FRESH! Unlike most of you... while I understand where you're coming from, I'll have to agree with the nay-sayers here that there was nothing "fresh" in your piece. It was basically a cut & paste job. the concept of repetition is very interesting. and it DOES still have lots of potential (trust me, you're not inventing anything here). but it also has to be a little bit more than noodling the same chord with minor variations over and over and over. where repetitive music can have interest is when subtle variation enters into the work. where what seems to be repetition is in fact NOT repetition but a subtle shifting, either of orchestral/instrumental colour or harmony. your repetitions were on the beat. you harmonic changes, what changes there were, were ON the beat and at regular intervals. there was no actual change between the beginning of the work and the end. you can argue till you're blue that that is what you wanted... but then, don't get upset when people tell you that it's boring. the important questions are: what can you do MORE with the concept? what can you do as a next piece? how can you expand on what you have done? I am FAR from being narrow-minded musically, so you can't accuse me in the same breath of close-mindedness. What I recommend is that you take your piece to the nearest university, find the head of the composition department and show it to him/her. at least that way you'll be getting an "official" opinion, one that you can't scoff away as easily.
May 26, 200620 yr Dislike classical music...WHy would I be here?! I love Classical music, from bach to tchaikovsky. It just seems to me, that people, should make better music, diffrent. 90% of the music in here has been done. And I don't concider my pieces minimalist. They're exactly the oposite.

No music is original; all music, currently, can be compared to styles. I agree with monkeysinfezzes by 100%. And your piece isn't the exact opposite of minimalism.
May 26, 200620 yr Oh god. My friend, might I be perfectly honest. This is not a personal attack on YOU, but on this tune. 1. It's not a prelude. Preludes are based on a simple idea, as yours is, but they don't GO ON FOR EIGHT MINUTES without changing. Listen to some Chopin or Gershwin to know what I mean 2. If this about love, then it's probably the most boring most wretchedly uninteresting pieces of music, as if the girl was on some acid drug and comatose. I mean, show some emotion man! This isn't even minimalism. At least those ideas are interesting. This is beyond crap. Major major major major minor minor minor minor... Not even the ending adds interest to it. The chord choices are few and far in between, and yeah, well. I can just picture some utterly stoned flowerpower chick staring off into space with her eyes rolled up, and a stupid grin on her face, waving back and forth. Maybe it sounds better live. 3. Definitely shouldn't be a major work. I felt like banging my head after listening to this. 4. You are WAY more talented than this utter drudge. I've heard your stuff, but THIS is an insult to your talent. 5. And no, repetition is NOT even close to being everything, AT ALL. If you want something to stick in people's heads, you gotta make it SOUND GOOD in the first place. For example, "To be or not to be". Everybody knows it, though it's only said once in Hamlet. On the other hand, if a little kid follows you around and says, "Knock knock, knock knock" for an hour, that get's VERY annoying. 6. I couldn't contain myself. I just had to say just how bad this piece was. 7. Sometimes, a critic just has to SLAM a work. This is one of the few pieces I just have to slam. Pop music tunes are more interesting than this. This is like the dullest thing I've ever heard. Silence is more interesting.
May 26, 200620 yr Ok, maybe its not a major work, from your perspectives, I understand that. But because you do not understand it, you cant say it sucks, can u? So true what the Romans used to say, "They Damn what they do not understand."
May 26, 200620 yr Well then, EXPLAIN it! Lol wow I wish I had this much publicity for Stars over Eger, lol, but whatever ;)
May 26, 200620 yr Love, Love is not something that keeps on changing, Love from the first time you feel it is a constant feeling. Never changing, at first you are exited, a bit...curios about the feeling itself. But with time you realize it never changes, it becomes rutine. It becomes boring. Nothing new, living life in circles, around and around, never changing, never changing. Till one day, it ends. That's what im trying to explain. Love can become such a cold emotion. It usually does, it dosen't die out, you just get tired of it. Now why Love Prelude...why a prelude? Well its in away, giving you a preview of Love, before you go through it.
May 27, 200620 yr Ok, The way I understand it is a Major Work needs to at least have subtle changes, be 8 minutes long, and have Love, or at least implied Love. So I respectfully ;) submit my offering, full of subtle shifts, quiet as they may be, but admittedly minimalist, be sure to check the score in various places to note the subtle changes.
May 27, 200620 yr Oh I see... love is stagnant, or gets boring after awhile. Interesting viewpoint, my friend, very interesting... I tend to believe that love is one of the wackiest emotions around, constantly changing, bubbling, frothing with passion and zest for life, and never becomes mundane, because there are so many new ways of loving people. But that's just me...
May 27, 200620 yr Well since this hasn't been moved yet... I'm beginning to wonder where the mods are. I can't wait to seem the major works reviewers review this. Ok... I will critique I have trouble hearing the melody. I think you used a little too much repition. What you did use was good, just over used The ending could use some work (yes I actually did listen to the whole thing) it just seems to ritard and then ends when the listener is expecting more. The piece could use some spicing up, say... some... emotion, perhaps some excitement. Ok, well thats the best advice I can give you. (also, people seem to be forgetting one major thing required to be considered a major work... it has to be for a performance purpose... if anyone here honestly thinks this piece could be accepted as a piece to be performed in a concert setting, may he please speak now).
May 27, 200620 yr Silence is more interesting than ANY music.... PSYCHE! You SUCK John Cage! mwahahhaa Nick, just in case you hadn't noticed, Cage wrote a LOT more than 4'33" Try listening to "Tiger in a Cage", or better yet, play through the piano part. It's absolutely gorgeous. Your attitude towards Cage's music is like someone only having heard Bolero judging all of Ravel's work from that one piece, accusing Ravel of endless repetition.
May 27, 200620 yr I suspect that the moderators are looking in on this like they might a culture dish. :D It's a great major work. Beethoven would feel right inconvenienced if he were about. not
May 27, 200620 yr make a new thread for this. hehehe...you said Horny...hehehehe You're right, Nick - perhaps I should. So many implications, not to mention interpretations.

Actually, Ravel's constant repetition in Boléro is used quite effectively and inteligently, done in a way that mesmerizes you Well, I am mesmerized by it...)
May 27, 200620 yr Well I think this topic has been more of a discussion about what constitutes a major work than anything else - so I'll try and steer it back in the direction of where it was meant to come from. Naturally, cause I'm nice  I give everyone the benefit of the doubt and listen to a work right through. I appreciate all music forms, some more than others of course, but I won't be rash as to ditch a piece because it's Baroque or something like that (even though I would love to!) I see we're going with a minimalist approach. To be honest, it did get very repetitive and didn't seem to go anywhere. Did actually bring back a memory of Sibelius' 2nd Symphony, fourth movement in the middle when the cello's have the slow rising line and bring it back to the main tune. To me, it sounded like music you here in one of those weird mirror places or a piece from a game in which you're completely confused as to where to go!
