Viola and Strings

Featured Replies

A rather brief, haunting piece for solo viola and strings. The inspiration for this hit me one day when I was driving home and listening to a news story...I might come back to this and work out something larger, but until then it's a kind of free-standing interlude. Please let me know what you think. I welcome any criticism, but please put things in simpler terms--I'm a near- musical illiterate...Made using Logic, with the Symphony Jam Pack and Kirk Hunter Solo Strings.Note: Score uploaded--no promises on whether it's right or not...

This is a good start to a piece, and I actually like the simplicity. It might be nice to vary your harmonic rhythm (that is, instead of predictably changing the harmony every two beats or so you could vary the duration of your harmonies). You might also consider more counterpoint, or adding one or more melodic lines underneath your main melody.

Thanks for the feedback, Orpheus--good ideas!

I pretty much agree with what BO said. It's nice to listen to, and it kind of has a sad feeling to it.

That being said, while the nice, mellow middle register of the viola is absolutely beautiful, it would've been nice to hear a little bit of the higher register to break the monotony.

Also, I believe that the network is having issues with your score. If you would PM the .pdf file, I'll reupload it for you so that we can see.

Thanks for the input, Fiend. Between you and Orpheus, I have a much better handle on this piece and where I can go from here. I got to the point where it just sounded done, but something was missing...

I uploaded the score. A blanket caveat: I can't read music, so I'm at Logic's mercy when it comes to notation--and it's a real struggle to create a presentable PDF...
