May 6, 201015 yr Short piece, but I like your melody. Since this seems like an exercise in tonal harmony and counterpoint, you might want to avoid parallel fifths (like the last 3 notes between flute 1 and clarinet 1) because they tend to be less colorful/resonant than most many other options. Could you please try to re-upload your audio file? Also a .pdf score is helpful for those who don't use Finale.
May 7, 201015 yr Like Orpheous said, I can't see your file until you re-upload it to the actually music, because I don't have Finale to use your MUS file :(
May 8, 201015 yr You seem to be a bit preoccupied with your harmony and voice-leading (judging by your score). Let me offer a few suggestions: -First of all, I think you don't use enough inversions and degrees other than I iv and v. I don't know if you've learned more about the other degrees, but variety is never a bad thing <img src="http://network.youngcomposers.com/elgg/ipb/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif" alt=";)" />. -Ms 3 - 5, Clarinet 1: Your line has too many skips. I would suggest using a G to harmonize measure 4, it would make the three measures much smoother. Also, bringing measure 5 up an octave would make the connection eith the descending pattern at Measure 7 much smoother. However, your flute lines would have to be modified so as not to be obscured by the clarinet, so whether you want to change that is up to you. -M. 7, Clarinet 2 : Why not bring the clarinet up to A, avoiding the jump of a seventh (it sounds blocky and disjointed, attracting attention and obscuring the phrygian cadence). -M. 8, Clarinet 1 : Unless you're arpeggiating the dominant, you want to resolve the active tendency of the leading tone (B - natural). -M. 9 - 12 : i - V7 - i 64 - V is a bit like I followed by three iterations of the dominant. Try changing up the harmony a bit so there is less repetition of V. -M. 15 - 16 : Use the melodic minor scale for your cadence, to imply V - i. - In general, I think your clarinet lines have too many skips, and are umelodic because of that. Melodic figuration (passing tones, appoggiatura, neighbor tones, &c. &c.) could also help to make the line more horizontally pleasing. The melody is good, and the orchestration is as basic as needed for something like an exercise, but the harmony and voice-leading need some work. Cheers! :santa:
