Beautiful Soup

Featured Replies

This piece was commisioned along with three others as part of incedental music for Alice in Wonderland. The text is taken directly from the play, with words by Lewis Caroll and is sung by the Mock Turtle.

Very beautiful piece, barnaby, thanks for sharing! I always love to hear a live recording. :55 to 1:11 reminds me of parts of A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics from the A Beautiful Mind soundtrack. Have you considered posting the other three pieces and sharing a score?

Beautiful Soup? Awesome name! :D

I love this! There's a sense of fantastical beauty in the piece that is absolutely wonderful. Speaking purely from the music and not taking into consideration the scene it was trying to portray or go along with, I wish if I hadn't known where it came from or what the name was, there was more of a way to tell that this is supposed to be somewhat ridiculous, or nonsensical in some way, without, of course, taking away from the majestic feel of the piece. But it's not a big deal, really...

Thanks for sharing, and welcome to Young Composers! I thought this was wonderful  I'll give it a 9/10 :)

This was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately it doesn't convey a sense of parody in the music... but nonetheless this is a very, very majestic work.

What's the text of this? I know the libretto comes from Alice in Wonderland, but I can't quite make out the words.

And what's this performed by?

It's funnier with the music serious like this.

I don't have ears, so a score would be helpful to me if you have one. There's also a lot of reverb in the recording (sounds like from the hall), so it's hard to hear clearly what's happening at points, so it'll help with that.

I love this! The rather late romantic German harmonies at the beginning are just my sort of thing, and I agree with 'last life' that the beautiful and 'serious' nature of the music makes it funnier (and oddly moving) - especially in context I would have thought. Has the performance for which it was commissioned gone ahead yet?
