Game Gregorian Chant

Featured Replies

In my mind, this is the background theme designed to set the mood for the protagonist discovering his now-desolate homeland (or something akin to that.) I tried to keep everything relatively static until the ending G major chords, since I didn't want it to draw attention or get too intricate. Also, sorry about the sample quality, I am not the best at mixing/ blending yet. Any criticism or critique is always welcome.(P.S. Score isn't meant to be performed, hence the lack of tidiness.)

Game Gregorian Chant

Hey man, I really like this! It's a shame that it is done no justice with the crappy midi vocals =/. Anyhow, I could really see this in a game, to me it paints the picture of a desolate or abandoned town ridden with disaster and destruction very well, very Final Fantasy-esque. Great job!

Thanks for the feedback! Do you know of any affordable vocal samples that would add a bit to the playback?

I listened to this awhile back and I forgot to comment. I did like it you have some nice ideas, but is this in a major key or am I wrong? I wouldn't really choose a major key for the story you described but I guess this works. What is that ringing sound you have repeating in the background?

If you want some cheap libraries, I've heard some good stuff done with Magnus choir, it's a synth and as far as I remember it's pretty cheap. But given the fact it's a synth it can sound better than some of the sample libraries out there.

Thanks for the feedback! Actually, it's in D Dorian, if I recall correctly, except for a small little bit of Aeolian with the Bb. I didn't see any option for Dorian, so I picked the closest thing I saw.

The ringing sound in the background is a gated tubular bell repeating D. I also added a bit of reverb on the lower frequencies to make it more drone-like.

Also, thanks for the advice with Magnus choir, I'll check it out for sure!

Lol. Your score is just binary code! Lack of tidiness? More like lack of english! Hardy har har.

Nice arrangements after 0:40. I like the little countermelodies you throw into the different voices.

Keeping your texture sparse is smart idea. Just make sure there's still enough interest in the piece musically. I could have done with a bit more percussion or strings. Very minimal but something to sprinkle every now and then to keep us interested.

Nice choral writing. It feels like gregorian chant but it's also not afraid to be relevant for a game or movie.

I understand why you left the bass voice singing the same note for a while. It's a gregorian chant so a drone like that sounds appropriate. You could still change it up a bit so that it still fits the mood your going for, but is a bit more interesting. Inserting rests into that one long note might be cool. What would be really neat arrangement-wise is if you took all the voices out for a bar or two in between some phrases. This would give your piece a bit more variety, and it would totally add to the desolation feeling your character gets. Plus, how haunting would it be to hear that scraping metal sound by itself? Very haunting.

Oh, and it cut out a bit too early. What's the ending supposed to sound like?

Nice work gameman! Keep it up,

-John

if this was made in midi, its pretty great, it reminds me of a great old sci-fi RPG game, where you were stranded in a planet full of aliens and you find your way their through politics and battles, your piece would definitely fit there.

i think though, that you were going too much with repetition there with the first motive, there should be somekind of "bridge" to let the ear rest from the first one! well, just my opinion...

Thanks for all your feedback, everyone!

John,

Sorry about the score, I'm not sure what went wrong there, haha. Also, I like the idea of a break from the voices a lot! I'll try to mess around with similar ideas in future compositions. Also, I meant for this to loop infinitely since it's in a game, but I wouldn't mind getting around to a legitimate ending soon. Thanks for the tips!

The J,

This was in MIDI, so thanks! Also, I could definitely picture it in a sci-fi game, I was picturing a futuristic wasteland when trying to find the right tubular bell sound, so perhaps that wasn't too disguised, haha. Also, after lots of listening, I think a little break from the main theme wouldn't be a bad idea, I'll definitely see what it sounds like!

Thanks!
