Confronting the Hostiles

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Some of you may remember me from WAY back in the day... I feel like I haven't been here in maddd long, so I thought I'd kick off my return with a short cue I just finished! Basically I was just going for a big-epic-orchestra sound... and the piece just took shape from there.

Hope to have more time to keep posting here in the future... I forgot how cool this place was!

Confronting the Hostiles

Awesome! I love the percussion, what did you use to make this?

Very Epic, I love it.

Definetely has a Hans Zimmer Feel to it, and I love Hans Zimmer Soundtracks.

Hope to see you around!

And just where the hell have you been? :P

Good to see you back. And you're making a nice entrance too! I enjoyed this. Thought the beginning was thinner than necessary, but the percussion is tastefully minimalistic at the start which was nice to hear. I actually just got back from seeing Prince of Persia and it reminds me a lot of what I heard there, which partly good and partly bad.

The sequencing needs some work because the string legatos near the beginning are sounding too lazy, but once things get going it smartens up a tad so that was good. The mix was nice, not much to complain about there. I wish you had exercised some of your orchestrating abilities here though...it's just so thin and hollow underneath the "bold"ness of it.

Anyway, well done, thank you for sharing!

Epic! Very, very nice!

Keep up the good work!

Nice! I love the percussion at around 1:45.

I feel like strong brass should be poking through in the middle, to bring out the ideas a bit more and add some power.

Also, to thicken things up a bit, at 1:25 maybe consider bringing in some fast moving lower strings (maybe eighth notes), such as in the cello, to increase the build-up.

Also, if you wanted to use some more electronic sounds, I would suggest something higher up going through the beginning especially, to make something of a glitter or shine. I think you have something up there already, but it's very quiet. Maybe consider bringing it out. This is the kind of sound I'm getting at Agnate Ukeleles (heard at the beginning of this song).

Thanks for sharing! :) Hope the feedback was helpful.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I'm glad you enjoyed the piece :)

Marius- Interesting that you heard some Gregson-Williams Persia in there... I gave the score a listen once it was released and couldn't decide how I felt about it... it was very much a trick out of the Remote Control book, but at the same time he used some pretty nice orchestrations. I know what you mean about the legatos and maybe a little more depth under the beginning (I'm thinking a nice, mellow synth pad would do it wonders). As for orchestration: I was trying to keep it relatively simple (strings/percussion - there actually is one little doubling by the flute/piccolo at one point, but it is mixed into the background)... I suppose a little more material for the other choirs wouldn't be TOO much to ask :D

Bergman- I really wanted to not use loud, blasting brass in this piece, just for the particular sound I was going for. I loved the suggestion regarding Jablonsky's little electroni-percussive-atmospheres that he often creates... I'll look into that!
