Rain

Featured Replies

This is a recording of one of my original piano compositions, entitled "Rain." I'm the one performing my piece here. This is one of the earliest more serious pieces I have composed. I began working on this in Spring 2006 and finished writing it just over a year later, since I was forced to take a break from it to work on other projects. "Rain" was inspired by the very vision I wished to evoke in the music: the swell and ebb of nature's tears. I hope you enjoy Rain!

i like this! could you upload the score?

The beginning figurations are a bit too poppy for my tastes; when the melody comes in it's better (subjectively for me.)

You're very artistic with your pianistic skills. Bravo on the performance.

I especially love the accented bass notes that resonate for two or three measures. I don't know if you wanted to compose in the pop aethestic; there's no 'classical' development here. Just different themes and repetitions of them. A score would be nice; we'd be able to review better if there was one. I liked the ending with the quiet arpeggios.

Yes! I'm actually reviewing the score right now to upload. As of right now, this is my only copyrighted score, so it will be a while before other scores come online. Thanks for the comments! In response to Jeremy L, this is neither Pop nor Classical. My goal as a composer is to shatter the preconceived line between art music and non-art music.

Kindly upload in PDF format? If you don't have CutePDF or PDFCreator, you can download it; it makes PDF files but is accessed through the printer menu.

Wow. That was utterly fantastic. I honestly think this is my favorite piano song on this site! Well done!!!

JeremyL - I'm working on it. I uploaded the .MUS file (Finale 2007 or later) for now because my PDF converter is on the fritz and Finale's save as PDF function won't work for some reason. I'll try downloading one of those programs you mentioned as soon as I can. And jesusfreak1277, thanks for the compliments! I'm glad you enjoyed this.

A bit too pop for my taste but I liked it nevertheless

It's good, but as usual I was turned off by the ''pop'' sound... there was more variation, development and originality then in a standard pop piano song, though, which improved my listening experience.

By "Pop," I assume you're referring to the fact that it doesn't sound like something from the 1700s. :)

It think it sounds fine. I don't think there's anything wrong with sounding poppy - it's just that certain practitioners of the style give it a bad name :P and you're 100 times more talented than them anyway.

I like it a lot. In fact, I'm favoriting it (I think). I think you hit on your desired imagery right on the head. And your playing is awesome. I think I heard one (count 'em, one) insignificant mistake in all of that.

That said.

Unlike many others here, I like the "pop/commercial" sound. However, this particular piece is too repetitive and simplistic for me, particularly too sipmle were the harmonic and rhythmic content. It'd make great video game music, but it's not intricate and clever enough to listen to on its own on a deep level. Call me a romantic, but I really like the marriage of "pop" and "complex" music. It seems like you went a little in that direction, but not enough for me. If I didn't know the title, I'd say it was pretty boring.

Also, you have a lot of score mistakes (not messiness, mistakes). A couple mispelled chords, improperly beamed rhythms, etc. I know YOU know how the rhythms go, but a lot of them should be spelled differently for a musician who has to read it. And I'm not sure I dig the James Bond mM7 chord at the end.

I love it!

It did, in fact, start off in the epitome of what "pop piano music" is, and I can't honestly say I was too crazy about the beginning, but the middle part made up for it. Like Peter said, it's sort of like some sort of merge between so-called "art" and "commercial" music, and you're actually doing a very good job at "shattering" the connection between the two. But I also have to agree that I think you should have gone even farther with the classical style -- it would have added a whole new layer of greatness to your piece that I think is missed out on as it is. That's what I think, anyway...it's your piece  And I think it's something to be genuinely proud of.

Thanks for sharing :D

Thanks for the wonderful feedback! My goal as a composer is to destroy the silly wall between art and pop music, and this is one of the first pieces I wrote with that goal in mind (it's from 2006-07). The differences between the score and my recording are because of minor changes I made to the piece since I did the professional recording :( which isn't a huge deal, but ya know...
