"Colours", for Four Trumpets

Featured Replies

This was an experiment on different chord-colours. Been interested the last while in chord progressions that metamorphasise, one note at a time, until a totally new chord emerges. Score isn't 100% accurate, I'm working on that.. Let me know what you think ;)

"Colours", for Four Trumpets

I thought that was really interesting, if a little on the boring/repetitive style. Strikes me as more of a warm up/exercise for the ensemble. In regards to the score, i'd take out the bar lines and the metronome marking altogether. But that's just me...

Okay. I'm a trumpet player, and I would not want to play this. Let me tell you why I like it and why I don't.

I do like the colors in this piece. And the general idea that you came up with is neat and very apt for interpretation and nice things being done in performance.

I don't like the way you presented it. First thing: the audio file you've got is playing French horn sounds; you realize that, yes?

Second thing: I think you got caught up in that sound. Every one of those entrances sounds like a horn call. This totally keeps the piece from being open to interpretation, namely treating it like a quasi-chorale. I think taking OFF the grace notes would allow the piece to slowly and delicately shift as each player sometimes creeps in on a dissonant note and other times hits it with an accent. As it is, the notes suddenly change every now and then with yet another slow horn call (on the trumpet), each one just like the last.

A thought for you. When I think about it, I think you actually could get the horn call idea to work (on horns, mind you). But the calls would have to be much brisker than they are being played. Horn calls are not sluggish. They can be held long, but the initial slur is quick and decisive. Ergo, the entrances would do better to be brisk and energetic leading to the long held notes.

YMMV. Don't take this personally, I actually really like a lot of the other stuff I've seen from you.
