2 Short Pieces for Piano Trio

Featured Replies

My first compositions. My goal is to create a catchy theme for use in a game or short animation. Please excuse the brevity; I'm not quite sure how to develop beyond a couple phrases yet.

2 Short Pieces for Piano Trio

Fun little pieces. Nice for a first composition, much more cohesive than the first thing I ever wrote. I liked the 1st one best, except for the sudden ending. If you have scores please upload them. People always like reading along the music itself :)

The 2nd piece felt already a bit more developed, but again the ending didnt satisfy me... Overal good job though! Keep it up

Hey sdlibervir! Welcome to YC!

1st Piece

Very cool. In terms of developing the phrases, another idea is to simplify your material. Instead of making your piece more complex, you can imagine that what you have is the developed section and simply work backwards from there. Personally, this piece sounds like the middle of a larger piece. It sounds like what you would get during a buildup and after a slower section.

Food for thought :)

2nd Piece

Nice work. Good job using some darker harmonies. That takes guts when you're just starting out. I like your progression from 0:29-0:41, especially the tonicization at 0:33. I wish the piano was gradually becoming more and more intense during that section. It sounds like a place for a long crescendo from piano to forte.

Cool pieces, sdlibervir!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I actually can't play a damn thing on a real instrument (except very slowly and with much practice), so I had to use Sibelius for these.

I totally see what you mean about development now. I guess I'm just afraid getting there might be boring for the listener. :)

True, but there in lies the fun and the challenge! The earlier section doesn't have to be just this section with fewer notes. There are a whole bunch of other things you can do: slow it down, simplify or change the instrumentation, mess around with your motives so that they only come together fully once we reach this middle section.

Just make it musical :) You certainly know how to do that.
