August 8, 201016 yr Hey,I'm currently working on a orchestral suite, this is the overture. Please tell me what you thinkSimeN Overture
August 8, 201016 yr Wow. Simen, I truly think this is one of your best works so far that I've heard. Your counterpoint is superb in the fugue. Truly nice work here. I look forward to hearing more.
August 8, 201016 yr Good French style. The fugue well done. Every day we are overcoming. I do not know anyone in this web that makes up the baroque as you better. Greetings comrade.
August 9, 201016 yr The piece has momentum all the way through as all good string writing should have. Great work!
August 9, 201016 yr I've nothing to say. Except 10/10. A very nicely done baroque piece. The flautist would very likely appreciate slur markings. The string players probably would appreciate bow directions as well, though I'm not quite as sure.
August 9, 201016 yr hey ! what a fantastic piece! i really loved it ! one of the best pieces i guess here on YC , there's only one thing i didnt like , in bar 40; 2nd note i heard something that sounded a bit weird , im not an expert in music but thats my opinion , i guess its the E from the violincello
August 9, 201016 yr This is a truly wonderful piece, I'm giving it 10/10 and it's going under my favs list :o I wish there was more to actually say about the piece, but... I simply don't know to say, except the tones are really gorgeous throughout the entire thing :) Thanks for sharing! :D
August 10, 201016 yr This is a brilliant piece - as others have noted, you have a great talent for writing counterpoint, something all too many composers these days seem to ignore. Your style and harmonic sense are wonderful - I'm reminded of Mendelssohn; specifically the overture to "St. Paul." The only advice I could possibly think to offer, if to perhaps work on bringing out a very well-defined theme/melody idea. There are recurring patterns and chord progressions in this, of course, but personally I found that there wasn't one that stood out to really "define" the overture. But really that is not a problem with this piece - phenomenal work, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the suite!!
August 10, 201016 yr I enjoyed listening to this! Very nicely done! Did Bach's B minor suite have any influence on this one? It has the same instrumentation. I played the flute part in a performance of that and the way Bach writes gives the flute quite a lot of concertante style writing in the episodic material of the fugue, but I only saw this happen once where the violin and the flute weren't doubling and this was only a relatively short section (and not particularly virtuostic). I notice that they double for the entirety of the section before the fugue also. In later movements are you planning to give the flute more of a role to play other than this doubling of the violin? Also is it customary in these kind of binary movements to repeat sections so instead of AB it goes AABB? The style is really nice and the counterpoint is fantastic, as has already been said! Looking forward to the other movements! Oscar
January 28, 201115 yr SimenN: I think if Bach was alive today, he might as well wrote this piece. For this is clearly in that style, but that is what you wanted to write in. As for theme to harmony relation, there's a clear establishment of theme and the harmonic language is well written. However, the pulse of the theme could be simpler. Remember, Bach, Handel, and the others wrote melodies that used simpler rhythms. Your counterpoint is superb. Here's my question: is this a french or an English overture? Consider what the entails and I think you can polish it off. At this point, I give 6.5/10
