Piano Piece (Waltz? I'm not sure how to categorize it)

Featured Replies

yeah, I'm not sure exactly what this is, or how to categorize piano pieces...but I did have some fun writing this little piece, whatever structure it's supposed to be. Anyway, I wrote it in about an hour or so. I'll probably expand on this later, since that ending doesn't necessarily HAVE to be there :)

anyway, hope you enjoy it :)!

Hey nice, someone who has Finale '06! You did an... interesting job of the expression using the GPO sound. While it sounds very concert-hall-y and far away, this does not lend well to actually hearing what's going on in the piece.

I will say that you have a good melody and some interesting left-hand work. This just seems like it could be longer and more developed. Maybe a middle section in the relative minor?

...You know, I have a file on my computer simply called "Piano Piece", too. :)

don't we all ....and yeah, I'm not sure how to best use GPO yet :).

I'll develop the piece more, definitely go back to the minor key, most likely. Just thought I'd do with a little piano composing to take a break from orchestras :ermm:.

Ah, I like it. The melody is concise and the chords make sense. I agree, and would like it longer as well. A contrasting section would add a lot to it.

I have to start by stating that I'm not really a connoisseur of this style of music, so my sensibilities may be off base here but..

You definitely have a feel for the idiom. Much more than me, I'm sure.

The abrupt change from a 6/8 feel to a 3/4 feel at measure 21 seems idiomatically incorrect. Why change the implied meter on the dominant? If anything, measure 22 or even 23 makes more sense. Measure 22 is where you reach the Tonic (the I chord) and measure 22 is where a new melodic phrase begins.

This is surely my personal preference, but many of your left hand voicings violate what I call "Low Interval Limits". For instance, the scoring of a major second in the bass clef in measure 27 at Ab and Bb is very muddy for my sensibilities. Likewise for the major and minor thirds (Ab-C) and (G-Bb) at M. 35. Of course, rules are meant to be broken, but these violations give the piece a romantic edge, where the harmonies are pretty much locked in the classical world. - For me, it's just an awkward juxtapostion of one style harmonically and melodically, and another - texturally.

Also, I would like to see what you had in mind for dynamics and slurs (I see you have some articulations). I'm always curious to find out why someone would put so many dots on the page and neglect these very important aspects of conveying how these dots should be interacting.

Nice piece. I like the light and playful personality of it.

well, here's the semi-finished piece. I didn't add all the dynamics and details but it's essentially finished. It's now 5 and half pages or so. Anyway, hope you enjoy the, er, "full" version :D!

oh, and yeah, I suppose it does get rather muddy down at the bottom...I'll probably have to go back and edit that a bit with those major seconds. I kind of fixed that time change, though :shifty:. Just a little tweaking, but I think it sounds better.

I like the piece a lot. I still think it sounds kind of whimsical eventhough its in a minor key. I would suggest that in measure 85 and on that you might consider changing clefs in the right hand and using 8va for both hands so that the poor pianist is not reading all those ledger lines! When I listen to this piece I get a picture of a couple just Waltzing away madly out of fun and passion.

I tried to to use 8vb (on the right hand) but it would try to make the left hand go lower too. So I figured if a pianist ever wanted to play this, I'll just transpose that part up an octave and write that in myself...Same for the left hand, I suppose.

Please, post the *.mid file of the last *.mus file. I only have the old Windows Media Player.

For the first edition: I don't like the, say, 5-7 last seconds, at the end part. I want to compose a Waltz, but, somehow, I can't.

This is going to be my "Left-Hand template".

Congratulations on this one.

Sorry, I had, apparantly, filled the limit of space...I deleted some of those Poem pieces, since I had them all in one anyway.

Here's the midi.

Wow!!! I agree, it sounds whimsical and playful, but in an almost wicked way... I can hear the little dark creatures coming out to engage in tomfoolery.

It does seem like everyone has a file named funny... I once had one called *this sounds good but i dont know what to name it* haha ;)

keep it up!

Your piece is great, i heard the first version and felt it was too short but then i heard the second one and you did a great job filling in new spots and creating new themes.

I really like the feel of this piece, great job.

I very much like it.

Ugh, couldn't sleep (er, while watching a DVD :D)....so instead, I'll post an unfinished "update" to the piece! It's now got three parts to it, kind of, with the third part not really started (or barely started, actually). I dunno, I made the second part and then added it to the first, and then decided to make it a three part piece kind of thing (with the second part being sort of "etudish"). Wow, this post makes no bloody sense...must be because I'm tired :P. Anyway, some parts I don't think are quite right yet, and I'll probably fine tune those later, but here's what I have so far. There's definitely a substantial amount of new stuff to make it worth hearing, though. Hope you like it :)!

Amazing. I really reply to every thing on here with that.

I can't write something to even compare to that. How old are you? How long did it tak to compose?
