Reflection

Featured Replies

This is "Reflection," a chamber composition I created during my first semester of college at Concordia in Moorhead. It's a fairly short piece for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass, and Hand Drum, and it was inspired by the abstract concept of a reflection. This recording is merely Finale 2007's rendition of the piece; I am trying to find players to put together a live performance, but that's not an easy thing to coordinate. For now, let me know what you think of this! Thanks. ~Mert

Hey Mert - It would be nice if you could upload a score, it would mean you get far more specific feedback.

I have the .pdf of the score for this piece, but I do not hold an official copyright to this, since that costs a significant amount of money. How would I know that it would be safe to upload the score?

Lol - You'll be fine just putting © Mert (but your real name of course). That's what all of the other composers on this site have done.

I don't think you would have to worry about that. For one, just do what John said and you'll be fine.

Once you write something it technically is yours and you hold the copyrights (proving that in court is something else though ;) ).

Moreover, I don't think people will go and steal this piece. I don't want to say this is a bad piece, but it is not something the music industry would cash in on, if you catch my drift (as with most pieces here, including my own :)).

If anything, a lazy music student would search this site and find some piece he/she would need for his/her assignment and hand it in. Other than that, most music here is not really worth the effort of being stolen.

The music felt pretty contemporary non-art music inspired (non-art as in rock/pop/r&b/metal/punk etc etc). The drum (djembe/bongo or something like that) was a nice feed. The ending was a bit abrupt imo.

Yeah, you don't have to worry about anyone taking this work from you. That said, I like this. Would be nice to hear the work performed live though.

Yeah, a live recording would be really nice! I'm working on that. As for the sheet music, I will try to get it put up soon! Thanks.

Hello Mert, I think this is badass! Good job. It sounds like a video game soundtrack. Hopefully you can have it performed; I'm sure you can find some willing participants at college.

There's some nice ideas in the piece, but the flute seemed too attached to its role as a 3rd note accompaniment to the strings. It's all too easy to assign instruments too-specific roles, (it's a habit I often fall into ) but if you allow different instruments to perform different tasks in the piece, you can really get the most out of your musical ideas  Other than that, this is pretty sweet.

The midi's playback is quite unfortunate: I hope you can set up a live recording sometime :D

Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for the comments. I really tried to make the flute stand out, actually; I used it for the melody roughly equally as the oboe, which is difficult to do considering the oboe's piercing tone. But yeah, when it wasn't melodic, it often went along with the strings. I really should put up my score...
