Angry Caverns Set

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

For the past month, I've been working on a few tracks for a flash game. I decided I'd share them all here in post rather than several.

The tracks span a bunch of styles such as rock, world, cinematic, country, and electronic. It's a fun mix which I had a lot of composing.

Enjoy!

not that i didn't like what you did john, it sounds great arrangement with good energies throughout. but- are you sure its cool to take bach's tocata without stealing? i think its a good gesture, especially since young kids don't even come close to that kind of music so its good that they can hear this. but i'm not sure its, well..legal.

Bach's works are no longer under copyright, thus in the public domain so it is legal. :)

They tracks all sound quite nice, your use of percussion is fun and each track creates a great atmosphere, immediately bringing to mind the era of time you had in mind, my personal favorite being "On Edge."

Though I will say that "Pirating Music"'s melody sounds quite a bit like a motif from Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

The first half of the phrase is exactly the same. Maybe it was intentional, but I thought I should point it out.

Keep up the great work,

POW

Thanks for your concern, the J. Bach's cool with it =P

POW, thanks for the comments. "On Edge" is one of my favourites as well. You're right that the pirate theme is very similar to Jack Sparrow's theme. In my defense, his is major, mine's minor, and there a few notes difference. But yeah, huge similarities =)

Thanks for listening guys!

awesome work john. I would say quotation rather than plagiarism on bach and zimmer! You've definitely made them your own.

The production is top-notch, and the whole thing sounds fun and interesting. Well done

ahh now i see, i could only hear the first theme, somehow soundcloud are having issues.

love the groove on neanderthal, it doesn't sound primate but hell of nice groove.

"oh my darling clamentine" quotation?? and that's legal too also i gather??

but i love the original concept with the banjo and whistling, that's what i'm talking about.

well basically everything else is ticking beautifully too, i think the pirate theme is tiny bit layed back, and sluggish moving, but that's about the only thing i can think of, and beside the fact that i enjoyed this and looking forward to play the game??

cheers john :phones:

LGV91: Quotation is an excellent way of describing it!

The J: Yes, yes. I used "Oh my Darling Clementine" as well. I know. I'm a horrible person. To be fair, the designer wanted that song cuz it's about mining and it was for the mining era =P. But yeah, I had to double check that was legal. I'm still not entirely sure =P. That track was lacking at first, but it somehow filled out nicely.

Pirate theme could definitely use some more energy or aggression.

The game won't be done for a couple of months but I'll let you know when it's out.

Thanks guys!

eheh i think the most original is the toccata, i enjoied very much, its pretty funny!

the others seems to me not so interesting...

i suggest u to change ur drum kit 'couse sounds fake :(

funny job !

The Toccata was the main theme so its more musically interesting as a piece. The other tracks are more background music so they're less standalone works.

You're right about my drum kit; it's not ideal but it makes drum-like sounds so I'm fine with it for now.

Thanks for your input, Alessandro!

-John

I think 50 years after the death of the author his music is no longer under copyright. So it's allright to take classical music and all that stuff.

Nice piece man, I really love it. it make me think of Jim Power:

Keep up the good work:P

Dom

edit: and for your drum kit...have you try the sky kit in kore player from NI?(it's free)

I have not, but I'm interested now in checking it out! I also listened to the link. Nifty stuff!

Thanks, Dom,

Hey John!

Very cool set of tracks!

Main Theme: Wow, love what you've done with it! Original and very energetic. Very song oriented, and it works beautifully!

The Neanderthal: I love those bass hits, then the harmonies with the marimba(?). The melodies put a smile on my face, very charming. Great game music.

Pirate Theme: Nice theme in the beginning, but I just want a little more boom? Maybe some stac strings behind the horns giving it a little more energy? The theme, as was stated, is very similar to PotC, but you change it up enough to not have to worry about copyright or whatever.

Excavating: Hehe love it. Great arrangement, really fits well.

On Edge: The bass line is a tad to predictable, but once the accompaniment comes in it really shines. Darker piece, but you still keep a great groove (as usual) and you make the melodies mysterious and somewhat light-hearted. I dig how it turned out. Btw, I love those chimes.

Future Pop: Now here is a sick donkey bass line. Awesome game music, very caverny with the verb. Also, great game music.

All in all great work!

Thanks a bunch, Jon!

Main Theme: I'm glad you said that. I've heard a few other pop/rock arrangements of this piece and I feel like everyone and their cat has now done an arrangement of this Toccata. So yeah, glad to hear you still found it unique.

The Neanderthal: In the perfect world, the bass would be even bassier, but alas. Had a lot of fun layering the marimba and that african instrument you pluck with your thumbs. The name escapes me right now.

Pirate Theme: Right on the money. Needs more boom. I'm still considering revamping this once the game is complete. Man, staccato strings would be killer. Definitely would drive it more. Good ideas, Jon.

Excavating: Much appreciated =)

On Edge: Definitely had fun making this one darker. Originally, it was all heroic and Nathan Drakey But the developer reminded me you play as a disgruntled cave not Nathan Drake. Yeah those chimes sound surprisingly good. They're pretty subtle.

Future Pop: Same thing with this one; originally, much lighter. Then my dad's like, "Dark and future eh? Why not use the whole-tone scale?" So I did, and it turned out kinda neat.

What have you been writing lately, Jon? I'm interested in hearing it.
