January 16, 201115 yr A piano piece in a loose key. (Title in PDF is wrong) Perpetual Motion Atmospheric
January 16, 201115 yr I would not say that this atonal, per say. For that implies the lack of a tonal center; your composition is post tonal which means that establishment of tonality differs from the traditional ways. This is much like the music of Debussy and Ravel who's music was impressionism. They had non-functional tonality...I also sensed Glass here. A good blend of the two. Nice work!
January 17, 201115 yr I'd go further than "not atonal, per se." This is not atonal, period. Most of it's in F, you flirt a little with Db major and end in Db major. Harmonically quite forgettable, rather minimalist in that regard. Pretty nice. I can see how you'd call this "perpetual motion." I like the romantic/pop implications toward the end, but I'm not sure I appreciated the context of it. The rest of the piece is all about this unchanging, relentless energy, and all of a sudden there's a climax and a final statement. The motion has ended. I think a lot of your sounds here are really, really cool. You also have a good concept. I'd say make the former more contextual by following through with your concept to the end. My .02 Thanks for sharing! :phones: -Peter
January 17, 201115 yr Those octaves in the bass towards the end are a sure sign that this isn't atonal! I think the name of the PDF file (Atmospheric) suits your piece better than Perpetual Motion. You piece definitely has a, smooth, minimalist feel to it, but personally I think pieces called "Perpetual Motion" should have a little more energy in them :P
January 17, 201115 yr Author Alright, thanks for feedback! And I wasn't really sure if anyone would call this atonal; I was really just saying that because it didn't seem to have a specific key and was written with no key signature
January 18, 201115 yr I like the idea of this piece very much! There were some very interesting harmonic progressions. The overall flow was very calming. However I feel that somehow this was semi-improvised. I mean, if you decide to review this piece, spend a lot more time on it, so that it becomes something where EVERY note has a well-defined purpose, it'll be much much better. But that's just a personal opinion. The piece is nice as it is too . Good job
